San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine forward Taeshon Cherry is one of Arizona’s top targets in 2018 and he has three schools that are currently standing out.
"I'm just balancing my options with every school,” Cherry said. “I would say Arizona, Gonzaga and Texas A&M are my top three right now."
The Arizona coaching staff recently traveled to San Diego to meet with Cherry and make its pitch.
"Coach Miller, Coach Richardson, and Coach Phelps all came to my house last week,” he said. “We talked for about two hours about what kind of player they see me as.
“They want me to be an Aaron Gordon type of guy, but they also said I can be better them him because of my jump shot. We also looked at some film on AG and Derrick Williams. It was a good visit.”
Arizona already hosted Cherry on an unofficial visit last October and will likely get him on campus again.
"It was a crazy environment,” he said of the visit. “Everybody is like family over there and I had people all around the school talking to me like they've known me for years.
“It's crazy how the fans have that appreciation and how much they love Arizona basketball. I think that would be a great environment for me. I want to play in that kind of setting."
Over the weekend, Arizona announced the hiring of former Washington coach Lorenzo Romar as an assistant.
“Coach Romar is like a father figure,” Cherry said. “He was a great coach at Washington when he recruited me and the whole it just felt like family.
“He would talk to my dad like he was a part of his family. I want to be in the type of atmosphere the Coach Romar presents. He's a great man and coach."
Cherry will go through summer AAU and then focus on closing in on his decision.
“I have not scheduled any official visits, but I am going to take them in the fall,” he said. “"I'm probably going to commit before my senior season. That will be sometime in October or November.”
What will his decision come down to?
"I'm just looking for a program with a family atmosphere,” Cherry said. “I really want to have a great relationship with the entire coaching staff and share the same vision as them.
“When I go out to schools, I'm always asking a lot of questions and trying to get a feel for everything around me. I want to be sure I go to a place where it's the best atmosphere for me."
