Oldsmar (Fla.) Christian School 2018 point guard Elijah Weaver is considered one of the top players out east due to his overall athleticism and size that will translate at the collegiate level.
Weaver’s recruitment is beginning to see more development nationwide, and that continues with recent interest from Arizona.
“After I got done working out on Tuesday Coach Phelps called me and expressed a lot of interest in me,” Weaver said. “All the coaches said they were very interested in my game and think that I can be a great point guard for them along with Brandon Williams.
“Coach Phelps can help me be a pro, which is the ultimate goal. He really likes my game.”
Phelps and Weaver have started to build on their relationship.
“My relationship with Coach Phelps has been great,” he said. “He expressed that he wanted to get to know me better and see what I could bring to the table.
“The coaches have told me that I’m a high priority for them and that I could come in and they would allow me to make a lot of decisions with the ball. If I needed to get a bucket I could go ahead and do that with all freedom.”
Arizona is not the only school involved in the recruitment as Weaver hold current offers from some of the best schools in the country.
“I’ve taken unofficial visits to USC, Villanova, Louisville and Florida," he said. "I’ll likely take more as the year goes on.”
What kind of player would Arizona be getting with Weaver?
“A lot of my game is molded on having a high IQ,” Weaver said. “I’m a big scoring type of point guard, but I also pass the ball well and am always looking to get others involved. I’m looking to play and compete at the highest level.”
Weaver is focused on improving several elements of his play prior to committing to a school.
“I’m working on being more consistent and tightening up my handle,” he said. “I also need to improve on being a better floor general and watching a lot of film before I go off to college. I know how important consistently watching film is, and you have to do that at the highest level.
“There’s no set timetable right now, but I will probably make my decision in the middle of senior year.”
