Cats Land Local Star

Not everything is doom and gloom concerning the UA football program. There are still some players out there chomping at the bit to become Wildcats. The Cats picked up a commitment from 6-2, 210 pound LB/FB Brandon Lopez out of Vail and there was never a question in his mind where he wanted to go. After commiting to UA, Brandon picked up another offer and still has more schools coming after him.

"New Mexico offered him last week and UCLA is coming down to watch him against Sabino. Washington and Arizona State were beginning to send a lot of stuff too," said Cienega head coach Nemer Hassey.

Coach Hassey has nothing but wonderful things to say about his star prospect.

"He's one of the best players I have ever coached and I came from Saguaro(Tucson). He is a good kid and he works hard. He is the best player we have here. Brandon never wants to be off the field. He wants to go both ways, all the time. He will go with the first team, second team, scout team, he doesn't care. He just wants to play."

Being called top player at Vail isn't too shabby as they have another player, Mo Wells, who has also been offered by New Mexico.

Lopez was offered a scholarship by 'Zona the first week of the month and didn't take long to accept. He was recruited by Coach Hankwitz.

"He has always wanted to be a Wildcat,"coach Hassey went on. "He wants to play in his hometown in front of his friends and family."

Brandon had similar statements.

"It is easier for my family to watch me and I will have them here for support."

Arizona likes Brandon as a fullback and linebacker. His coach thinks he'll end up at linebacker and Brandon also hints that that may be where he resides for UA.

"I like hitting and will probably end up on defense. It doesn't matter to me whether I play inside 'backer or outside."

From a production standpoint it really doesn't matter. So far this year in three games Lopez has rushed for 495 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense he has 23 tackles, one fumble recovery he returned for 57 yards, and two sacks. Cienega has beaten Catalina, Ironwood Ridge, and San Luis. They take on Douglas tonight.

Lopez carries a 3.1 GPA and will take his SAT in two weeks. He would like to attend UA's Medical School.
