Media Day has Cats picked fourth

Pac-10 coaches met yesterday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for a media day gathering. According to a poll of the media, UCLA is the odds-on favorite to win the conference crown.

The media poll results with first place votes in parentheses and total points:

1. UCLA (24) 267
2. Stanford (1) 222
3. USC 208
4. Arizona (2) 200
5. Cal 161
6. Oregon 117
7. Arizona State 111
8. Oregon State 95
9. Washington State 57
10. Washington 47

UCLA received 24 of the 27 first place votes and Stanford one. With the loss of Travis Hanour Arizona is down to nine scholarship players yet the Wildcats garnered two first place votes, second among all teams.

The gathering was held at the Staples Center as a means of hyping the post season Pac-10 Tournament, but not all the coaches are in favor of the event. Lute Olson, who's been opposed to the tournament for many years didn't back off his criticism of the event.

"I don't think we're setting the right example in terms of class attendance," Olson was quoted in the Arizona Daily Star. "The Pac-10 cringes every time I say that, but I'm telling you what I think."
