Juniors to Watch: Sunnyside

Sunnyside Head Coach Richard Sanchez has two players he recommended to us for next year. One of which, Xavier Smith, will be one of the most heavily recruited players in the state next year after rushing for over 1,800 yards as a junior. Here is a closer look at Smith and Jaime Cota. Sunnyside is the defending 4A state champ in football and has won the title two of the last three years.

Xavier Smith is a 6-1, 215 pound running back prospect who is already receiving attention from Arizona State and Colorado.

"He is a legit division one recruit," remarks Coach Sanchez. "He moves well running the ball on the outside and inside. He has good vision and quickness. I also think that he could be a linebacker with his size."

Jaime Cota is a 6-0, 170 pound quarterback/defensive back prospect.

"He is a good athlete that throws the ball well. He has a very nice release on his throws."

Sunnyside returns 15 starters next year as they go for their third title in four years in the Arizona 4A state classification.

Cat Tracks will be catching up very soon with Xavier and Jaime for interviews.
