Seton Hall at a glance
Coach: Louis Orr
Location: South Orange, NJ
Conference: Big East
Last Meeting: The Pirates beat Arizona 81-77 in the 1991 Sweet 16.
Good Wins: Pitt, Providence, Syracuse, DePaul
Bad Loses: West Virginia, Villanova
LAST TIME OUT: Arizona fell to Washington in the semi0finals of the Pac-10 Tournament. Villanova beat Seton Hall in 61-60 in the first round of the Big East Tournament.
OVERVIEW: Seton Hall is not your prototypical Big East team. Sure they are aggressive, but they are not the bruising bangers that the Big East are known for. The Pirates are aggressive, and attack the glass, but won't beat you up like some other of their conference brethren.
"In making a comparison to other teams that we've played, they are probably more like Washington than anyone else," said Lute Olson. "Although they are not as physically imposing, they are extremely quick and very aggressive on the glass. They are a man-to-man team for the most part."
The Pirates are quick and athletic, but lack the size on the inside. Their starting big men are under 6-8 and they have just one seven-footer. Despite a lack of size they are a great rebounding team, one of the best in the Big East.
Andre Barrett is the best player on the team, but they are actually quite balanced. Five players score in double figures, but in the end this team will only go as far as their point guard will take them.
"I had no idea that he was as good as he (Barrett) it," Olson said. "What he reminds me of is a shorter Mike Bibby, in terms of his ability to find the open man. He's always there at the right time and he can find guys anywhere on the court at anytime. As soon as I watched the first tape on him, I thought this kid is as good of a point guard as there is in the country. You can see the kind of respect he is given by his teammates and opponents alike."
Kelly Whitney and Andre Sweet are very solid rebounding forwards, though neither is very tall. Both play hard at all times and do a lot of scoring off of offensive rebounds.
BEST PLAYER: Andre Barrett is one of the best point guards in the nation. He's both a great passer and a great scorer.
SETON HALL'S STRENGTHS: The Pirates are very athletic and a great rebounding team. Barrett is a fantastic point guard. They are a solid defensive team, limiting opponents to 64 ppg and just 39.6% shooting.
SETON HALL'S WEAKNESSES: They lack height. They are not a very good outside shooting team. If Barrett struggles, the team tends to lose. They have had trouble against teams with good post players and could be challenged by Channing Frye, Hassan Adams and Andre Iguodala.
OUTLOOK: Arizona is more talented, but that has been the story all season. It could come down to Salim Stoudamire vs. Andre Barrett. Whichever of those two players has the better game could come out the winner.
