Cats could wrap 04 class with new name

Jesus Verdejo has taken some significant steps with his recruitment. The native of Puerto Rico has five visits scheduled but could decide sooner than later.

Arizona is firmly in the driver's seat in the recruitment of Winchendon Prep 5th year guard Jesus Verdejo. The one-time Temple commitment is leaning towards the Pac-10 power.

"Arizona has officially offered him," Miami Tropics head coach Art Alvarez said. "He's leaving on a visit Sunday and gets back from there on Tuesday. If he calls and says he likes the visit, he'll commit either Monday or Tuesday.

"Josh Pastner has really worked the kid real hard."

There are contingency plans in place should Arizona not get it done. Alvarez and Verdejo have gone ahead and set up four other official visits.

Kansas State could host Verdejo the weekend of April 10th. Baylor, Florida and Memphis are tentatively scheduled for consecutive weekends through April and early May.

Verdejo was the leading scorer at Winchendon this year and also is a member of the Puerto Rican Junior National Team.

"He wants to have an opportunity to play with the big boys."

The Cats played this one close to the vest. Verdejo looks to be insurance in case Andre Iguodala goes pro this offseason and gives them depth at the wing in case of early departures of Hassan Adams, Jawann McClellan or any other perimeter player in the next few years.

We've heard that Verdejo is talented, but looks to be a four-year player. He has the attitude to be brought around slowly, but would give the Cats some much needed depth.

He's Arizona's to lose and may very well be a Wildcat by the middle of next week. A commitment from him would officially end the recruitment of Davis Nwankwo and Robert Rothbart.
