Arizona baseball advances to SuperRegional

Arizona used a four-run fourth inning as the impetus in its 7-6 Regional victory over Notre Dame. The UA concluded a perfect run through the South Bend Regional and advances to SuperRegional play this weekend.

John Meloan continued his string of winning Sunday performances in limiting the host Fighting Irish in the early innings.

Notre Dame managed single runs, all by virtue of solo home runs, in the third, fourth and fifth, but it was the Wildcat four-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning that played a key role.

Jason Donald delivered the big hit in the inning, one of a total of seven home runs on the afternoon. Once Arizona captured the lead, it was Notre Dame playing catch-up. After trimming the Wildcat advantage to 4-3, the UA answered with two runs in the sixth.

Notre Dame had a big three-run seventh inning to tie the game, but Arizona was up for the challenge again when it managed to push a runner across the plate in the bottom half of the inning. Koley Kolberg kept the Fighting Irish bats silent from that point on to earn the save.

Arizona registered nine hits and three errors. Notre Dame had seven hits and one miscue.

The Wildcats move into SuperRegional play, a head-to-head best two-out-of-three format.
