2006 Focus: Spencer Hawes

Spencer Hawes, a talented post from 2006, says schools from the Big 12, Pac-10 and ACC are showing early interest...

Spencer Hawes, 6-10 JR C/PF Seattle (Wash.) Seattle Prep, is clearly going to be among the best post prospects in the west for 2006. He's already very skilled, with a nice touch to about 17 feet. He's got an excellent feel for the game, with good feet and hands.

We spoke briefly with Hawes at the Best of Summer tournament and asked him about schools that have expressed interest in recruiting him.

"I've heard from a lot of schools," Hawes said. "Washington, Texas, Kansas and North Carolina State have all offered. Arizona was rumored to have offered -- that's what I heard from some Internet guy. But I'm wide open right now."

We asked Hawes if he has a criteria yet for choosing a school.

"Academics will play a big part," said Hawes. "Location isn't a big deal, but if I were to go east, it would have to be far and away the best fit. And I'll look at what my teammates do --Martell Webster, Jon Brockman and Mitch Johnson."

Hawes suffered a stress fracture and missed the Best of Summer tournament. He said he'll be able to play again in about three weeks.

A good student, Hawes told us his GPA is 3.8.

CAT TRACKS' ANALYSIS: We've heard that the Wildcat coaches are in love with Hawes and will make him a priority in the 2006 class. He is very athletic and is only getting better.
