Gilbert Harris Q&A

The past few weeks have seen a resurgence of Gilbert Harris. Harris is the ideal back when the Wildcats go to a one-back set and he seems poised to be a great change of pace when Mike Bell takes a breather. The junior running back discusses his move from fullback to halfback and the entire group of backs.

The past few weeks have been some of your best as a Wildcat. Is it a product of the offense, the work you've done or are you just getting better.

Gilbert Harris: "I think it is more of just a progression. I', getting a better understanding of the plays. I feel more comfortable back there. It's just a matter of taking a little bit of time. Now I'm feeling more comfortable back there. I'm figuring out where the plays are hitting and just running more comfortable. I'm not thinking as much now."

You have a very nice combination of speed and power. You seem to be perfect for the offense. How do you like playing in the offense?

Harris: "I like this offense a lot. It is a big change from last year. Last year I was in a position where I was blocking a lot more. I wasn't too comfortable in that type of role, but now I get to play the position that is more like the position I played back in high school. It is more like what I thought I'd be doing when I got here. I'm definitely happy right now."

You were purely a half back in high school, right?

Harris: "I was a pure halfback in high school. That was an adjustment for me when I first got out here, but I feel real comfortable now with the situation and plays I have right now."

Have you slimmed down a bit?

Harris: "I did trim down, I trimmed down a lot. Since the new strength and conditioning staff came in I cut down a lot of body fat. I cut down my pounds. I'm definitely a little more trimmed down, a little faster."

You look like you are still pretty strong.

Harris: "Yeah, I'm still strong. I'm just working hard out here. Mike and I are trying to work together to have a good one-two punch back there. I know I'll definitely be able to run the ball strong this year."

You have a full spectrum of backs. All three of you are very different. What does that mean to the offense?

Harris: "We all have a little different style, but at the same time we all work together. We all bring something different to the table. Mike is more of the shifty type. Chris has a lot of power but also has speed. That is one good thing, we all have a lot of speed. We just have a little different styles, but as a whole I think it works really well."

What are your expectations for the season?

Harris: "I think we have high expectations. We want to wing right now. I think we're going to be strong on offense when it all comes together. When we are all clicking on offense I think we'll have one of the best offenses in the country."

CAT TRACKS' ANALYSIS: Harris has played very well as the number two back. He has shown a nice burst and uses his strength as an inside runner. Mike Bell will be the primary back, but Harris gives the Cats a nice option when he needs a breather.
