Texas DE enjoys visit to Tucson

One glaring weakness on the defensive side of this year's Arizona football team is the Cats ability, or lack thereof, to rush the passer with any kind of success. So far, eight games into the 2004 season, the Cats have sacked the opposing quarterback just 11 times. With the Cover-2 Zone scheme that the Cats employ in the secondary it is vital that the front four get pressure on the quarterback and that simply hasn't happened this year.

Looking to add legitimate pass rushers to the roster is always a priority in recruiting, but it is especially important for the Wildcat coaching staff this recruiting year. Already the coaches have locked in a verbal commitment from Desoto defensive end Donald Horton Jr. and they are looking to add two more pass rusher to this class.

With that in mind the coaches hosted Alief (Texas) Taylor defensive end Michael Bennett over the Homecoming weekend. Bennett, who would enroll in January if he committed/signed, said that he had a great visit to the desert.

"It went real good, I liked it a lot," said the 6-foot-4 inch, 246 pound Bennett. "I was hosted by Ronnie Palmer and he showed me a good time. Ronnie is a real good guy and he was a good host."

Bennett filled us in on what all he got to do during his trip.

"I got to see all the facilities and everything, they have great facilities," he said. "And I met with all of the coaches and I met the President of the University and the Athletic Director and they were both really nice. I also got to meet Lute Olson and he is a great coach and real good guy too. I really like all of the coaches at Arizona. Mark Stoops is a funny guy and Coach Brez (Recruiting Coordinator Dan Berezowitz) is a funny guy too. Coach Joe Rob (Joe Robinson) is a real cool guy. Really all of the coaches were great."

Other than the normal things like getting to know the coaches and the school, Bennett hung around some of the young guys on the Wildcat team and he says that he hit it off real well with a few of the players.

"Ronnie is a cool guy and so was James (Alford)," he said. "I also hung out with Lionel (Dotson), J.T. (Johnathan Turner), Dominic (Patrick), Bobby (McCoy) and Brandon Lopez. They are all good guys; I had a lot of fun. They all showed me what Tucson is really like. I had a lot of people telling me that Tucson was this little boring hot desert town and it was none of that. It is a fun place and I really liked it a lot. It was better than what everyone was telling me."

Bennett continued and talked about Arizona Head Coach Mike Stoops.

"I like coach Mike a lot," he said. "He is a good dude, you know. He is just straight up. He is real animated on the field and Garrett (Fields) and I were laughing, we loved it. The crowd really likes it too. The crowd was great too; there were a lot of people there."

Bennett was allowed to see the future Arizona uniforms and he said that he really liked what he saw.

"I don't know how much they want to get out but I really liked them a lot," he said. "I think the new uniforms and the new jerseys are tight. I think everyone will like them a lot."

Michael Bennett will visit Wisconsin this coming weekend (11-6) and he will also travel to Missouri on the 20th for an official visit.
