2006 Focus: Alex Tyus Revisited

One of the better prospects in the Midwest next year is Alex Tyus. Scout.com's No. 37 junior in the country talked to us about schools that are showing interest early.

Alex Tyus, the 6-foot-6 junior small forward out of Florissant (Mo.) Hazelwood Central, is going to be one of the better players nationally at his position next season. He's already a very good looking athlete with a feel for the position.

"I'm getting more consistent as far as my jumpshot," Tyus said recently. "My jump shot and my perimeter skills as far as handling the ball under pressure [have improved]."

Last season, Tyus averaged 12 points a game. With Kalen Grimes enrolled at Missouri, Tyus will be called upon for more points and to be the leader of his team, a role which he says he's feeling more comfortable in.

College recruiters are getting pretty comfortable with Tyus too. "Right now I'm just trying to see who is all interested. I probably won't start taking visits until the spring but right now I'm just trying to learn about schools that I like. I'll read about them or get information."

Recently, Tyus visited Missouri. "I got to see the new facilities and I went to their Black and Gold game."

The Tigers are recruiting Tyus pretty hard but the forward says he's thinking about leaving his home area. "I really kind of want to get out of the Midwest." Tyus said he prefers warm places and that could play a part in his decision.

For example, he said that he would definitely like to visit Florida, Miami, Arizona and Syracuse (the exception to the warm climate rule).

Right now, Florida, Miami, UCLA, North Carolina, Texas, Missouri, Southern Cal, LSU, Syracuse and Arizona are keeping a close watch on him. According to Tyus, St. Louis, Purdue and possibly Arkansas have offered already.

"I like places where they have up tempo game and a team that runs the floor. I want to be able to depend on the coaches to get me to the highest level and I have to be comfortable with the environment."
