A Closer Look: Cats repel the Raiders

We present the game log, written live from the baseline seats on press row. Exactly three feet in front of the trombone players in the UA pep band. This time I got an upfront and personal look at the Wright State Raiders of the Horizon Conference.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Salim Stoudamire was on fire. He scored 24 points, including six straight threes, five in the first half. He also played tough defense on Wright State guard DeShaun Wood in the first half.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Channing Frye blocks a Zach Williams shot that leads to the fast break. Frye ran floor with Mustafa Shakur and Hassan Adams. Shakur fed Frye who had the big slam and drew the foul.

TURNING POINT

Arizona goes on an 24-6 run to take a 36-14 lead and they never looked back.

OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY

The Cats did not mess around. The Cats scored on 11-of-12 possessions. They made 11 consecutive shots, including four Salim Stoudamire three-pointers.

SECOND HALF SURGE

The Cats opened the second half with an 11-2 run.

SECOND HALF SURGE PT. 2

The Raiders would not die. After going down by 32, Wright State went on a 19-4 run to keep the game somewhat respectable.

MORE SECOND HALF

For the second straight game the Wildcats lost the second half. Wright State beat them 45-41 in the second 20 minutes.

KEEPING PACE

At one point in the first half Salim Stoudamire had 15 points, while Wright State had just 17.

ON THE BOARDS

Arizona outrebounded the Raiders 35-25. They also had 13 offensive rebounds, but Isaiah Fox and Jawann McClellan had nine of them.

DEBUTS

Isaiah Fox, Jesus Verdejo, Daniel Dillon, Brett Brielmaier and Matt Brase made their season debut. For Dillon, Verdejo and Brielmaier it was their Wildcat debuts. Of the three only Verdejo scored. Dillon did pick up a personal foul a second after he hit the floor. Jawann McClellan, who made his Arizona debut against San Diego, got his first bucket of his college career on a first half runner.

DEFESNE

In the first half Wright State made just nine field goals, while committing seven turnovers.

NIT SUCCESS

Arizona is now 14-1 in the Preseason N.I.T.. They have won 14 straight in the event.

THE SERIES

The Wildcats and Raiders met for the first time Thursday night. All time the Wildcats are 6-1 against teams who currently compete in the Horizon League. Their lone loss came to Detroit. In 1977 they lost to then Detroit-Mercy 70-68 in Detroit.

UP NEXT

The Wildcat play Virginia on Sunday. The Wildcats are 1-0 against the Cavaliers, beating them in the 1994 NCAA Tournament. The Cats play Michigan next in the N.I.T. Arizona lead the series 5-2 against the Wolverines, but lost the last meeting 73-71 on the road in 1997. The last time the Wildcats faced each opponent they advanced to the Final Four. If Arizona beats Michigan they would play the winner of the Wake Forrest match-up. The last time they played Providence they beat the Friers to advance to the 1997 Final Four. The Cats have never met Wake Forest in basketball.

BAD NEWS

Top-25 forward recruit James Keefe committed to UCLA Thursday. Keefe visited the Wildcats for Midnight Madness and was listing Arizona along with the Bruins, Duke, Stanford and Notre Dame.
