Wildcats stun Sun Devils

Arizona took advantage of five ASU turnovers and then withstood a furious Sun Devil rally to beat their in-state rivals 34-27.

Arizona actually had to survive a late rally from reserve quarterback Sam Keller. Keller had to spell starter Andrew Walter who left the game with an injured shoulder.

Keller came off the bench down 14 and almost sent the game into overtime. He led the Devils to a score when he hit Jamaal Lewis on a three-yard touchdown pass. After a Wildcat punt Keller marched the Sun Devils down to the Arizona 23, but the drive stalled when Mike Miller dropped a pass on fourth down.

Arizona took three knees to seal the win and the fans stormed the field.

"This is a great way to go out," said senior linebacker Pat Howard. "This is the beginning of great things."

It was the Wildcats who took advantage of mistakes and in doing so the Wildcats had season highs in scoring and yards. Arizona forced five fumbles and recovered four of them. Walter also threw an interception. The Wildcats turned the five turnovers into 24 points.

Richard Kovalcheck passed for 242 yards and three touchdowns. His 47-yard scoring pass to Mike Jefferson that proved to be the game winner.

Kovalcheck also found Steve Fleming on a touch pass when the defender slipped. Fleming raced 55-yard for the score that tied the game at 10.

Fleming closed out his Wildcat career with five catches for 71 yards, one of his best games in his career.

A Sun Devil fumble led to a Nick Folk field goal, but a fumble got ASU back on top. Kovalcheck had the ball stripped while in the grasp and Jimmy Verdon rumbled 23-yards for the score.

ASU looked to build on their lead but Jesse Ainsworth's field goal went into the back of a teammate and Arizona took over. Kovalcheck marched the team down the field and capped the half with a two-yard pass to Jefferson.

Arizona added a six-yard rush by Gilbert Harris before the Jefferson long bomb.

Mike Bell, who played his prep ball in Phoenix, rushed for 137 to lead all rushers.

Walter had 318 yards passing before leaving the game, while Keller added 94 yards in relief.

Arizona snapped a two-game losing streak to the Sun Devils.
