JUCO DT has great visit to Tucson

Entering this recruiting season the Arizona Wildcat coaches knew what everybody else knew. UA needs defensive tackle help in a pretty big and immediate way. That is where recruiting the JUCO ranks comes in and that is why the Cat coaches played host to one of the top JUCO tackles in the country this weekend.

Grossmont (CA) College defensive tackle Dallas Mauga was recently named to the JC-Gridwire All-American 1st team after having a stellar sophomore season. Mauga was in Tucson this weekend and apparently the trip opened his eyes.

"I liked everything about it," said the 6-foot-1 inch, 290 pound All-American. "I sat down and talked with Coach (Mike) Stoops and also with Coach (Mike) Tui (Tuiasosopo) and I really like them both. Coach Stoops was telling me about their defense and he gave me the low down on my position and how I fit in to their defense. I had a really good time."

Mauga went on to say that he felt a really good connection with Coach Tui.

"Coach Tui man, he is real," he said. "He reminds me of my own dad in a lot of ways. He is real straight forward and he keeps it real. He is blunt and he just tells it like it is and I like that. I like what he had to say to me and I know I could play for him."

Mauga said he was hosted by fellow Samoan Fata Avegalio and that Fata showed him a good time.

"Yeah, Fata was my host and he is a nice guy," he said. "We went out on Friday night and had a real good time. I met his family and they are all cool. I got to meet a lot of the players and I got a real good impression from all of them. I met Mike Bell and Tony (Wingate). That guy is cool and he is real fired up. Overall I got real good feedback from the players about the program and where it is heading. Arizona is definitely a program on the rise."

Mauga has many offers but he says that after this weekend he is down to only two schools and he plans on making his decision after his final visit next weekend.

"I think I will just take my visit to SDSU (San Diego State) next weekend," he said. "I like them and I have been there before. It is close to home. I was supposed to go to Oregon State after Christmas but I will decide after my visit next week."

So overall, how does Arizona sit after the visit?

"Oh man, I am really high on Arizona now," he said. Overall everything was great; I liked it all a lot. The Strength and Conditioning coach is awesome and the facilities are amazing."

Since Mauga has a small child at home he said that his decision will be heavily impacted on distance from home.

"I know SDSU is right there," he said. "Before this weekend I would have said that Arizona was probably too far away but it only took like 55 minutes to get there so I don't think that will play a huge role in my decision now that I am down to the two schools. I think Arizona is close enough to home for me."
