Shelton officially Zona bound

Entering the holiday quiet period with just three scholarships left to give is a completely new ideal in Arizona Football recruiting. Never, and I mean NEVER, has the Arizona Football program been in this situation before. The recruiting game at Arizona has always been a January heavy venture for previous coaching staffs.

In year one of the Mike Stoops era the recruiting dynamic has completely changed in Tucson and has done a complete 180. Not even the minimal contact period has stopped the Cats from getting verbal commitments.

Case in point, now the Arizona coaching staff only has two scholarships left as Compton (CA) Dominguez four star defensive end Michael Shelton finally called the coaches and committed.

"I called and committed to Arizona earlier today," said Shelton. "I have wanted to for some time but I have been trying to work on some things but I knew I wanted to go to Arizona. My mom wants me to go there and I have wanted to go there pretty much all along."

Shelton says that he called and committed to Arizona Head Coach Mike Stoops and defensive tackles coach Mike Tuiasosopo.

"I talked to Stoops and Tuiasosopo this morning and I committed to both of them," he said. "They said that they were real happy for me and excited to have me in their class."

According to Shelton, a big part of his decision was the coaching staff and how they recruited him.

"I met coach Tuiasosopo at the Nike combine in San Diego," commented Shelton. "He liked what he saw and then they came to my school the next week and offered me a scholarship. Coach Tui is a real good guy. I like all of the coaches that I talked to really. They are all real good guys and you can tell that they care about their players. They made sure that I was doing my homework and everything during the year. They really care about you and not just what you can do on the football field. They are real honest and straightforward and I like that about them."

Shelton has yet to see the U of A campus and will do so in the future but for now he says that he is focused on getting his SAT test done. According to Michael, he doesn't need to see the campus to know that is where he belongs.

"I take the SAT on January 22nd," he said. "If I can I will take my visit to Arizona the next weekend but if I can't I know I will try and get there for as many of the spring practices that I can. I want to get there as much as I can to see the coaches and to see the team practice. I don't have to see the campus or anything to know that is where I want to go. It is a big school with good academics and a great coaching staff and I just know I want to go there."

In his senior season Shelton put up monster numbers in leading his Dominguez squad all the way to the title game.

"Yeah it was a good year," he said. "We got all the way to the championship game before we lost to Notre Dame. I had 115 tackles, 21 sacks, 5 forced fumbles and 1 batted pass. I wish we could have won but it was a good season."
