Hargis Could be AZ's Top Prospect for '06

Jon Hargis was the only junior in Arizona to be named first team all-state this year. He has a vast list of early favorites stretching across the nation. The Mesa Red Mountain star is expected to be one of the most heavily recruited defensive tackles in the nation next recruiting cycle.

Height: 6-4
Weight: 290
40 time: 5.2
Bench: 290
Squat: 435
Clean: 255
From: Mesa, Arizona
High School: Red Mountain

Hargis recorded 81 tackles, 10 quarterback hurries, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and one blocked field goal as a junior.

He has not yet received an offer, but expect that to change very soon. "I have received letters from Arizona, Arizona State, and Notre Dame," said Hargis. "Arizona has been sending me a lot of stuff and I am going there for the junior day. I like Coach (Mike) Stoops because he is all about defense. It is also close to home. They have been inviting me to a lot of their basketball games."

The defensive tackle grew up rooting for the Sun Devils, and is awaiting info on their junior day. "I have been a fan of ASU for a while. My whole family are all-die hard ASU fans; my parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Coach (Dirk) Koetter is a good coach and I think he has them on the right track."

Hargis is also very interested in many other schools, including the L.A. schools. "USC has an attacking defense that is great to watch. I don't know where I could go that would be better to get me into the pros. That is my ultimate goal. UCLA is very similar as far as getting guys into the pros. They seem to be coming along real well and that is somewhere that I think I could be a star at."

He also likes Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kansas State, and Georgia. "I am really open. I like the Pac Ten, the Big Twelve, the Big Ten, and the SEC."

His parents might have other ideas. "I know they would kind of like me to stay close, especially my mom."

Hargis takes a lot of pride in his game. "I work hard to be better than my opponent. I study them so I am always more prepared. I give 110 percent on every play because I do not want to let anybody down. I am on the field to get the job done."

He carries a 3.0 core GPA and is taking the SAT on March 12th. Hargis is thinking of majoring in Business.
