Mark Stoops breaks down the defensive recruits

Arizona is bringing in an amazing recruiting class, in part on the strength of the defensive reputation of the Stoops brothers. Despite that, the Wildcats brought in more offensive players than defensive performers. The defensive players they did bring in are top flight. Defensive coordinator broke down the part of the class he'll be coaching in an exclusive interview.

"Michael Johnson is here already. No. 1 junior college player I wanted in the secondary, that we targeted, went after and got committed. He's a rangy safety. He plays the deep ball well. He has great range. He's physical. He's going to be a very good addition to our secondary in the spring."

"Byron Smith is a guy we've recruited for a couple years now. He had a lot of red tape, and a lot of school work. He's shown a great commitment to get all his work done to get here. He was a big-time player a year ago. He hasn't played in awhile, so he's going to be a little rusty, but he's definitely going to be a force on the inside."

"Garrett Fields could possibly grow into an interior defensive lineman. He's a big kid with lots of potential. We watched him coming into his senior year, and he showed phenomenal quickness and strength. He's a very big defensive end who could potentially move inside."

"Corey Hall is a good defensive back. He has a knack for making plays. He's a playmaker. At critical times in critical games he seems to always come up with big plays. I remember watching film on him as a junior in a playoff game that won them the game, a kid is running to the end zone, and he tackles and strips the ball to secure the win. That's the type of player he is."

"Donald Horton, a defensive end from DeSoto, an exceptional player. Very active on the defensive line, very quick, great hands, makes a lot of plays. Many players in the greater VFW area, a lot of the high school coaches, can not say enough about him and how big an impact player he is."

"Xavier Kelly comes from a great high school football program. Great football player. We were very, very fortunate to build such a great relationship with Xavier and hold off all the colleges that were after him, including Texas late in the game that offered him a scholarship late and tried to woo him away from us. He's just a very active football player. He has great instincts for a linebacker and is always around the football making tackles."

"Michael Shelton is just an exceptional football player. Great strength, extremely active, makes a bunch of football plays. We expect Mike to be an impact football player here."

"Brandon Tatum played in the Army All-American game. Great size, great range, and a tremendous amount of potential. Great leaping ability, and he will give us a tremendous presence in the secondary."
