Game Talk: Arizona's Seniors Play Final Home Game

The Arizona seniors rolled Oregon State in their final home game. We were there to get all the quotes following the win.

Head Coach Lute Olson

On the Senior's Last Home Game:

"[This was] a great way to finish up the last game at home for the seniors. I thought that all three of them really had a chance to get involved."

On the rest of the team, other than the three seniors:

"I think they had an incentive of it being their buddy's last home game and it meant a lot to them. They were not going to let them go out of here without a win."

"I was really pleased with Hassan [Adams] overall. He had five steals, 13 points. He was giving it his all every play."

On the Team:

"They are a competitive group. There isn't a day that goes by in practice when they aren't going after each other. You learn the game in practice."

On the Seniors:

"You can really feel for these four seniors. Joe [Williams], it's unbelievable how much time he puts in. The managers really put in a lot of hours to make sure everything goes right. They are here an hour and a half before practice setting everything up. Matt [Brase] has become a crowd favorite. It was good to see him get the opportunity to score today."

"In the country I'd like to compare Salim's [Stoudamire] numbers up against anyone."

On the Game:

"I thought it was obvious that we were quicker, and it was difficult for Oregon State to deal with that."

On Salim Stoudamire:

"Before the season starts the assistants will see how many they [the players] can make in a row before they go in and Salim hit 40 straight from three. He shoots it from 25 with ease."

"He's worked really hard on creating space for his shots."

Senior Guard Salim Stoudamire:

On his Final Home Game:

"It didn't start hitting me until right before the game that this was my last home game. I got kind of upset."

On Having his Family There:

"It meant a lot, and that they support me through thick and thin even when I had my bad times."

On the Game:

"I thought [Coach Olson] was going to put me back in. I was going to kiss the floor."

"It was a lot of fun. It's fun kicking someone's butt."

"It was fun. I have to give credit to Mustafa [Shakur] for finding me. I've been feeling strong for a while with my threes."

"[Oregon State] tried to push me around and get in my face. I'm used to it by now. They do it all the time. We won the game and that's the most important thing."

On the Seniors:

"All the seniors have been good buddies. We hang out a lot and go have fun. It's special to have their support. I'm proud of Brase. I thought he would dunk at the end, but he must have gone out last night."

On the Future:

"It's just been a goal of mine to graduate. I've only got a couple more classes at the end of this semester."

What do you want to be seen as when you leave?

"A good person. Forget basketball. A good person."

Senior Center Channing Frye:

On his Final Home Game:

"It was good to have my family come out. The game was fun, but I wasn't enjoying it until the second half. That's when I really got going."

"I'm kind of sad that this is my last game. I'm happy with how we played. I'm happy that all the seniors played real good and that all the fans came out to support us. At the same time I really want to accomplish more things past this. I can't just settle for this. I want to go further and do bigger and better things."

On the Game:

"We got on them early, and we really played them really hard to being. Salim [Stoudamire] was disgustingly good today. When he's good, I mean I know they were trying to stop him from shooting, but there's only so much. I was just out there doing my thing and grabbing rebounds."

On Salim Stoudamire:

"I think when they hit him on his arm [during a three-point attempt], I think he was just pissed after that and that was the worst thing they could have done."

"To be honest I thought he hit 15 threes. I saw he had 20-something at the half and I was like, ‘oh my goodness.' It's not like he shoots 20 shots he only shoots six or seven of them."

Senior Forward Matt Brase:

On the Final Home Game:

"This has been a great experience. I just want to stay involved for as long as possible."

On Stoudamire's Record Breaking Performance:

"By halftime we all knew that he had six or whatever, and we said, ‘all right. Salim's got a chance at this.' Pretty much all the guys on the bench knew and we were talking about it. It was just a matter of time before Salim broke it. I can't believe it took him this long to do that the way he shoots the ball."

Sophomore Guard Mustafa Shakur:

On the Game:

"I think everybody knew that we needed to play tough. We knew we had to keep playing the way we've been playing. I didn't know that Salim [Stoudamire] was even close to the record until he actually got it."

On Stoudamire's Performance:

"This was even better than an average day because he set a record tonight. He played above the way he's been playing lately. He was really consistent tonight. He played well from start to finish I think."
