Junior Sean Jarrett finished off the win with a hitless final three innings to pick up his second save of the year. He struck out three and walked none in his fifth appearance of the season.
Leading 1-0 after the first inning, the Wildcats offense sent 12 batters to the plate and took advantage of a pair of UT errors to break the game open with seven runs in the second.
Sophomore Jason Donald led off the frame with a single through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on Chris Frey's ensuing base knock.
Freshman Brett Scyphers' sacrifice bunt attempt right back to the mound in the next at bat turned into a run-scoring effort. UT starter Kyle McCulloch gunned down Donald at third on the bunt, but the throw from Clay Van Hook on the double play attempt on Scyphers at first sailed past Chance Wheeler to allow Frey to score all the way from first for a 2-0 UA advantage and Scyphers to reach third.
With the infield drawn in, leadoff hitter Trevor Crowe blooped a double just out of the reach of shortstop Seth Johnston into shallow left center to plate Scyphers. Junior Brad Boyer followed with an infield single to place runners on first and second for senior Jeff Van Houten.
Ranging towards third, UT's Johnston fielded Van Houten's grounder at short and appeared to have thrown Crowe out at third on the fielder's choice, but Van Hook dropped the toss for his second error in the inning to load the bases with just one out.
Jordan Brown tacked on two more runs for a 5-0 lead with an opposite field single and Bill Rhinehart, Donald and Frey each chipped in with run-scoring singles to cap off the inning.
Victimized by the two errors in the second, McCulloch (3-1) was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs, only three of which were earned, on eight hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Texas scored a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, but could not draw any closer to end the fifth-best start in school history.
Individually, eight of the nine Wildcat starters in the game finished with at least one hit. Boyer (2 for 3, 2 R), Donald (2 for 4, RBI) and Frey (2 for 4, R, RBI) all paired hits on the afternoon. UT's Thomas Incaviglia led all players in the game, going 3 for 4 with two RBI.
Arizona and Texas will meet up for the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. MST. Senior Sean Rierson, who struck out nine in a complete game win at Texas in 2003, will take the mound for the Wildcats.
