Game Talk: Arizona Falls in the Elite Eight

CHICAGO-Arizona fell to Illinois 90-89 in the Elite Eight, ending their Final Four hopes. Cat Tracks was on hand to get all of the post game thoughts.

Arizona Head Coach Lute Olson

On the Game:

"I think everyone now sees why they (Illinois) is 36-1…they are not a team that is going to give up. I thought that we made some mistakes down the stretch and Illinois capitalized on them. I am proud of my guys, we were a little edgy at the beginning as we turned the ball over on four of our last five possessions."

On Illinois:

"Instead of looking at what's wrong with Arizona, you should look at Illinois. They dug in, made big shots and did it without a lot of rest."

On the Late Illinois Run:

"They knocked down three-pointers under pressure, under extreme pressure."

On the End of the Game:

"We'll look at the end of the game for a long time from a coaching standpoint. There are a number of things that are going to cause a lot of sleepless nights for everyone."

On the Late Mistakes:

"Illinois was pressing us, but we were not aggressive and our guys were not coming to meet the ball and that caused us to turn the ball over too much."

On Channing Frye's Performance:

"I thought Channing played a tremendous game tonight. He was 11-for-14 from the field, 12 boards and six blocks. He played well…couldn't have played a better game tonight."

On Deron Williams' Defense on Salim Stoudamire:

"I thought Williams did a great job on him (Salim). He made it difficult for him tonight."

Senior Center Channing Frye

On His Thoughts While Up 14 With Three Minutes Left:

"Our thought was to continue to be aggressive, to switch out on threes and to continue to grab rebounds. We committed stupid turnovers and they (Illinois) took advantage of those.

Senior Guard Salim Stoudamire

On His Performance:

"Yes I had an off night tonight, but I tried to do other things."

On Deron Williams' Defensive Performance:

"No, he is a great player."

Junior Guard Hassan Adams

On the Late Illinois Run:

"They kind of took us out of what we were accustomed to doing and things started going their way."

On the Last Play:

"We wanted to try to get it to Salim (Stoudamire) but they were covering him. Time ran down and I had to put it up."

Sophomore Forward Ivan Radenovic

On the Late Illinois Run:

"It is hard to know what happened. They took over the game the last four minutes and made big shots."

On Arizona's Season:

"You can say that our season was a success. We won the Pac-10 Conference and made it to the Elite Eight but I think we could have gone further, to the championship. We played like a championship team for 36 minutes."

On the Crowd:

"We have played lots of games in front of loud crowds. This crowd was shut up for 36 minutes but they woke up for the end."

Sophomore Guard Mustafa Shakur

On the Late Illinois Run:

"They hit some three's with guys in their face. We played good defense all game. We went at it from start to finish and left it all on the floor."

On Playing Tense Down the Stretch:

"I think that may be a possibility. At that point you try and run your sets and work for shots. I take my hat off to Illinois."

Freshman Guard Jawann McClellan

On the Late Illinois Run:

"I really can't explain it. It went by so fast and they hit a lot of three-pointers."

On the Game:

"We knew we were the better team tonight but the best team played the full game and we only played 36 minutes."

Illinois Head Coach Bruce Webber

On the Game:

"What an unbelievable game tonight, our kids didn't quit when they got down 15 points in the second half. We made some big shots to get back in the game and force overtime and we made some big shots in overtime."

On the Team's Lack of Defense at the Start of the Second Half:

"We didn't guard at the start of the second half, but our kids remained poised and they made the plays when it counted."

Junior Guard Deron Williams

On the Win:

"It feels great, the best feeling in the world right now and it took all we had to get this win tonight."

On Salim Stoudamire:

"I wanted to be physical and force him to take bad shots. Coach told me to make it as tough as possible for him to score, and I felt that I did that as good as I could have today."

On the Comeback:

"It was just meant to be."

"We needed to keep fighting and I thought we did not panic and we gave the team a fighting chance, but I never thought that it would come down like this."

On Arizona:

"They played so tough and I never thought that this game would come down this way, I can't imagine what they are feeling right now, they played so hard."

Senior Forward Jack Ingram

On the Game:

"We knew we were just going to have to fight all game long. This was a great game. It is just not the greatest game I have ever played in, but the greatest game I have ever watched."

"I just can't believe that it's over, but it was a relief when that last shot didn't fall. We were fortunate in the way that ball bounced today."

On Arizona:

"Give credit to Arizona, they played hard the whole game."

Sophomore Forward Warren Carter

On Arizona:

"Arizona is such a strong team and at the end, we knew that if we were going to go down, it was going to be with a fight. We always had hope and always had faith. We knew we might be down but we weren't out."
