John Romero update

Tucson produced a number of D-I football players, including a pair from Salpointe Catholic HS. The Lancers are again loaded with talent, with John Romero Jr. leading the way.

John Romero, Jr. (6-5, 295, 5.0) from Tucson Salpointe Catholic (Az.) is being recruited for both defensive end and offensive lineman, but he prefers defense. "I like hitting people. That's why I like defense," said Romero.

"I have good speed for my size and I'm pretty strong too. Nobody expects a big guy to move that fast. I have really quick feet, but I need to improve my overall 40 time and work on getting off the ball quicker."

Romero benches 385 pounds, squats 530 pounds and have a 26-inch vertical jump. He already has two scholarship offers, from in-state Arizona and Arizona State.

Romero favors the Sun Devils slightly over Arizona, Michigan, Colorado and Cal. "They have an awesome program. Right now I'd say they were my favorite. It's a big school and the program is doing really well. I'm going to their Junior Day this Saturday (April 9th) and my parents like them because they are only about two hours away.

"But Arizona is only 10 minutes away and distance will be a factor, just not a big one. I don't think I'll go too far away, like the East Coast, but I don't mind leaving the state. I really like the new coaches at Arizona and I think they're finally going to be turning it around this year. I already went to their Junior Day and I plan to go to their camp and the Arizona State camp as well."

Despite favoring the in-state schools, Romero says his favorite growing up was Michigan. "They would always win, so I watched them. I love their tradition and how tough they are."
