Baseball season ends

Defending national champion Cal State Fullerton got an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Wes Roemer, capitalized on five Arizona errors and made numerous outstanding defensive plays to defeat Arizona 6-3 at Goodwin Field in the Fullerton Regional Championship on Monday.

The Wildcats completed their season 39-21 overall and fell just one win shy of making a second straight super regional appearance. The Titans improved to 45-16 for the year and will host Arizona State next weekend in the best of three super regional.

Roemer (7-3) , who was named the most outstanding player of the regional, held the potent Arizona offense in check for a second straight night, limiting UA to three runs on eight hits in eight innings of work. He finished with five strikeouts and no walks and was aided by multiple diving plays by his defense.

Vinny Pestano worked the ninth for his team-leading 13th save of the season.

Offensively, CSF took advantage of three Arizona defensive miscues and posted four hits in the third inning alone to break open a 1-0 lead with five runs in the frame for a six-run advantage.

The Wildcats edged close with single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth, but each time Arizona threatened to turn out a big inning, the Titan defense came to life to snuff it out.

UA's John Meloan (10-3) was charged with the loss despite giving up just two earned runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings.
