Cali back liked Tucson, down to three

As soon as the Cats walk off the field after their bowl win this coming winter they will lose three seniors in the offensive backfield. Mike Bell, Gilbert Harris and Pedro Limon all will graduate and move on leaving depth concerns in their wake. With Chris Henry, Terry Longbons and Xavier Smith still in town the UA coaches can almost cherry pick the best running back available for the 2006 class.

One of the best if not the best in the class of 2006 is Rancho Cordova, California stud James Montgomery. As a junior the 5-foot-10 inch, 195 pound back had 1,915 yards rushing on just 215 carries and has 35 touchdowns.

James was in Tucson this weekend with his grandfather and according to James, the visit could not have gone much better.

"Oh man I loved it," Montgomery said. "I toured the school and saw the facilities and got to talk a lot with the coaches and saw the locker room and everything, it was all great. It was tight, I liked everything a lot."

During the recruiting process Montgomery has been able to keep in good contact with running backs coach Kasey Dunn and James says he likes the young Arizona coach.

"Coach Dunn is a cool guy, I like him a lot," said Montgomery. "I have talked to him a lot in the past and it was good to meet him in person. He is a good guy and a good coach. My grandpa and I got to meet with Coach (Mike) Stoops and that was just cool. The whole coaching staff is really down to earth and they are all pretty cool. All of the coaches are different but they all speak their mind and shoot it straight. They don't blow any smoke and I like that."

While in Tucson, Montgomery also got a chance to meet with some people from the academic side of things and he came away impressed.

"I want to major in Sports Medicine and I got to meet with a doctor that teaches so that was real cool," said Montgomery. "I know they have a good program so that is a plus for me."

During his visit James said that he got to hang around some of the current players and that he enjoyed spending time with some of the guys.

"I hung around with Antoine Cason and Randy Sims and they were good guys," he said. "I also hung around some of the incoming freshman and they were all good guys. They told me about what the coaches are like and how hard they work, I had a lot of fun."

When it comes to narrowing down his list of school, Montgomery says that he has a top three and that he will visit the other two of the three later this summer.

"I have Arizona, Washington and UCLA at the top and those are my three schools," he said. "I am going to visit Washington late this month and then I am going to go down to UCLA and see them again and then I should be able to decide where I want to go. My Arizona trip was tight though."

Montgomery also said that he got a sneak peek at the new Arizona uniforms and that he was impressed.

"Oh man, we forgot our camera but they were tight," said Montgomery. "I saw the blue and white ones and they were cool but they showed me the red ones and man, they were tight. I like the uniforms a lot."

CatTracks will keep you up to date with James as his summer progresses.
