Texas corner visits Tucson

With the recent commitment of Manteca, California cornerback Michael Turner the Arizona coaches look to have room for just one more cornerback in the 2006 recruiting class. Along with Turner the Arizona coaching staff found corners that they liked enough to offer early and one of those young studs was in Tucson yesterday for an unofficial visit.

Dallas (Tex.) Kimball cornerback Cam Nelson (Cameron) hopped in a car with his high school coach on Sunday and drove to Tucson to check out the Arizona campus and get an up close and personal look at the Wildcat coaching staff.

"We drove out and we went over to the school yesterday," said the 6-foot-1 cornerback. "I really liked everything that I saw. I got to talk a lot with the coaches and they all seem like really good guys and everything. They showed me the campus and the weight room and everything was very nice."

One of the higher points of the brief visit for Nelson was getting to meet some of the players currently on the team.

"I met and talked with the tailback, I forget his name," he said. "All of the players were cool and said that Arizona is a great place to be. I talked to their cornerback Antoine (Cason) and he was telling me that I could come in right away and help him out in the secondary. He said how fun it was playing for Arizona and for coach Stoops. I liked the whole trip a lot."

Nelson is not only a student of the game but he is very good student in the classroom and he had a chance to meet with a few professors in his area of interest.

"The professors were all pretty cool," he said. "I want to major in Marketing, Sports Marketing so I got to talk to a few people and everything was good. I am already qualified basically because my GPA is like a 3.8 and I got a 20 on the ACT so I know I could get in at Arizona and get a good education."

During the summer months Nelson has been able to keep in good contact with the coaching staff, which was what prompted the visit to Tucson.

"I have talked to both coach Mike and coach Mark and I really like them both," said Nelson. "They asked if I could get out for a visit this summer and I really wanted to check it out so we went. Both of the coaches are good guys, they are easy to talk to and are obviously good coaches."

When it comes to making a decision Nelson admits that he nearly pulled the commitment trigger on the visit to the desert.

"I was thinking about committing while I was there," he said. "Coach Stoops said that he didn't want me to rush in to anything and he wanted me to wait a while and make sure I was making the right decision. I know that they really want me to go there. I don't know when I will make my decision. I might make it before my season starts if it feels right and everything but then I still might want to take some trips. They haven't offered me yet but I am supposed to visit Nebraska on September 3rd."

Currently Nelson holds offers from Arizona, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Tulsa, Houston and Baylor. Nelson did say that he has a definitely leader after his trip though.

"Arizona is definitely at the top right now," he said. "They are out front by pretty far. I think it would take like a minor miracle for another school to beat Arizona right now."
