News and Notes from Arizona/Wyoming

ALBUQUERQUE, NM--Arizona and Wyoming have a great deal of history dating back to the old WAC Conference. There are also ties between Lute Olson and Cowboys' coach Steve McClain. Here are several notes from the off day at The Pit.

*Donta Richardson was the main defender on Dan Dickau and will defend Jason Gardner. "There is no doubt he will be defending Gardner," Wyoming coach Steve McClain said. Lute Olson has high praise for Richardson. "He's quick and long," Olson said.

*Arizona is 18-15 all time against Wyoming, last winning 94-84 in 1998. Cowboy center Josh Davis posted a double-double that game. Rick Anderson is the lone Wildcat to play in the game. Luke Walton was a redshirt freshman and watched from the bench.

*Arizona is now 33-19 all time in the NCAA Tournament. They are 1-1 in NCAA games at the Pit.

*With 14 points against Wyoming Jason Gardner will move into sole possession of 10th place in the all-time scoring list. He would pass Sean Rooks. He would need a phenomenal run in the tournament to pass Anthony Cook, who is currently 96 points ahead of him. That would mean he would need to average 19.2 points a game with the Wildcats advancing to the Championship game.

*Arizona has scored over 80 points in 20 of their 32 games this season. They are 16-4 in those games.

*UCSB's Mark Hull hit 8-of-10 three-pointers. It is the fourth best outside shooting performance in tournament history.

*Arizona won the battle of the boards, 42-28. They are 15-1 when outrebounding their opponents.
*Rick Anderson tied his career high in scoring with 19 points. He hit a trio of three-pointers, which also ties a career high.

*Anderson's 19 points allowed him to eclipse the 400 point mark for the season, making him the fourth member of the team to top the 400-point plateau. It is the second time (1999-2000) since 1987-99 that four players were close. Last year's squad had two (Michael Wright, Gilbert Arenas) but had three other players who were less than 16 points away from the mark.

*Arizona is the only team in the Albuquerque sub-regional without an international player on the roster. Altogether there were 19 foreign players at this venue. Davidson led the way with eight on its roster.

*Wyoming advances to the second round for the first time since 1987. They are 9-18 all time in NCAATournament play. They have also won 16 games in The Pit, second most to only New Mexico.

*The Cowboys' 12 blocked shots against Gonzaga are a season high.

*Wyoming made 13 straight field goals in the final 3:48 of the Gonzaga game.

*Josh Davis is third all-time in rebounding at Wyoming. With 11 more boards he'd surpass Fennis Dembo and move into second place.

*Wyoming head coach Steve McClain attended a Lute Olson camp as a high school player while Olson was at Iowa.

*McClain also coached former Wildcat power forward Ben Davis while he was at Hutchison (Kan.) Community College.
