Midnight Madness becomes McKale Madness

The University of Arizona men's basketball team will open practice for the 2005-06 season with another installment of McKale Madness. The festivities in McKale Center begin Friday, Oct. 14, with free admission beginning at 9 p.m. PDT.

Fans interested in getting the best seats are invited to attend that evening 's Arizona volleyball match. The 12th-ranked Wildcats host California at 7 p.m. For tickets, contact the McKale Center Ticket Office at (520) 621-2287. The UA volleyball team hopes to break the school's single-match attendance record of 9,141, which was set in 2002.

In addition to the first official practice for the Wildcat men, fans will be treated to an evening of non-stop entertainment, including t-shirt and poster give-a-ways, a player autograph session and an address from head coach Lute Olson.

Gateway is sponsoring a promotion where a UA student will win a laptop computer in a 3-point shooting contest. Alltel and Rock 107.5 are sponsoring the "Drop the ROCK $10,000 Shot" contest in which a randomly selected contestant will have the opportunity to win $10,000 by making a half-court shot.

Following player introductions, there will be a 3-point shooting and dunk contest, followed by a 20-minute scrimmage.

Fox Sports Net's John Salley will host the event. Salley, who won four NBA championship rings during his 11-year playing career, is currently a commentator for FSN's "The Best Damn Sports Show Period."

Parking for both events will be free to the general public in the Cherry Ave. garage and in all university lots surrounding McKale Center.
