Cats picked first, seventh

LOS ANGELES - The Arizona Wildcats are picked to finish first in the 2005-06 Pacific-10 Conference Men's basketball race, according to a poll of media members who cover Pac-10 men's basketball.

The poll shows that defending Pac-10 champion Arizona gathered 23 first-place votes and is picked the favorite this season. Stanford picked up nine first-place votes and is tabbed for second place. UCLA, which picked up the remaining two first-place votes is slotted for third place. Washington, the defending Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament champion, is picked for fourth, followed by California, Oregon and Oregon State. USC narrowly edges out Washington State for eighth, while Arizona State rounds out the preseason poll.

The Arizona women's basketball team has been picked to finish seventh in the Pacific-10 Conference in a preseason poll of media members who cover Pac-10 women's basketball. The Wildcats received 59 votes.

Stanford, which finished 32-3 overall and advanced to its second consecutive Elite Eight last season, was picked to finish first, garnering 10 first-place votes in the poll. This is the fifth-straight year that Stanford has been picked by the media as the preseason favorite.

UCLA (109) earned two first-place votes and was selected second, while USC (103) notched one first-place vote and was picked to finish third. Arizona State (101), Oregon (66) and Washington (65) were tabbed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the poll.

Rounding out the poll were California (43), Washington Stte (25) and Oregon State (17).

Four returning All-Pac-10 players were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team – Nikki Blue of UCLA, Brooke Smith and Candice Wiggins of Stanford and Emily Westerberg of Arizona State. UCLA guard Noelle Quinn, an honorable mention all-conference selection who sat out the majority of last year due to injury, was also named to the team.
