Experience wins out

It wasn't quite a real game, but it was a chance for the Wildcat basketball team to put on the real uniforms, get in front of the fans and play a full 40 minutes with officials. It was a chance for the Wildcat youngsters to try and knock off the upperclassmen, but it was the older players who pulled away to a 91-71 win in the annual Red/Blue Scrimmage.

For the first time in recent memory it was a true Red/Blue game as the juniors and seniors donned the red uniforms, while the young pups wore the blue.

Hassan Adams led all scorers with 22 points as the Red team pulled away late in the first half and cruised to a fairly easy win.

The game was knotted at 26 when the veterans rattled off a 17-4 run before the half that closed the door on any hopes for the newer Wildcats off pulling the upset and having bragging rights over their more experienced counter parts.

Early on it was the young guns who were in control, with two freshmen scoring the first seven points of the game. J.P. Prince started things off with a three and Marcus Williams added a tre of his own after making one of two free throws.

Williams led the Blue with 21 points.

Other than a Bret Brielmaier 19-footer, the Red team scored the next 17 points. Adams got the Red on the board with a finger roll and Chris Rodgers scored the next five. An Isaiah Fox lay-up preceded back-to-back threes by Adams and Mustafa Shakur. Another Adams bucket capped-off the drive and the Red had a 17-9 lead.

The Blue stormed right back, this time Jawann McClellan getting involved. Williams sandwiched a three and a driving lay-in around four points from the sophomore from Houston and the Blue regained the lead.

They'd only lead one more time when a Williams up and under move put them up 24-23.

Brielmaier tied the game at 26 and then it was all Red for the rest of the half, getting points from six different players as part of that 17-4 run.

The second half saw the Blue get within 10, but as soon as McClellan hit a three pointer to make it a 51-41 game, the Red went on an 11-0 run.

All told eight players scored in double figures, while three others scored at least eight. Fox, Ivan Radenovic and Mohamed Tangara all had eight rebounds. Mustafa Shakur led the way with 11 assists and only three turnovers.

*Both Jawann McClellan and Chris Rodgers played. Both had been nursing injuries for most of the preseason. McClellan did leave the floor with an injury in the first half but returned in the second.

*Prince and Fox has five personal fouls but were allowed to remain in the game.

*Jesus Verdejo and Daniel Dillon played for both teams. They were "traded" for each other at the half.

*Miles Simon coached the Blue team with Jack Murphy serving as his assistant. Jim Rosborough coached the Red with Reggie Geary assisting. Lute Olson and Josh Pastner floated between the two teams, although Pastner began the game at Simon's side.
