Cats Top 2006 Class with Another 4-Star

It is well known nationally that Mike Stoops and his coaching staff can recruit with the best staffs in the country. Already this recruiting season they have landed such studs as 5-Star defensive end Louis Holmes and –Star defensive tackle Gabe Long, both from the JUCO ranks. Now tonight Arizona fans got more good news, this time from an absolutely huge high school recruit.

4-Star cornerback Devin Ross announced his decision to attend the University of Arizona tonight on the High School Spotlight show on Fox Sports West 2. was able to speak to Ross after he taped his announcement.

""I love everything about Arizona. I love the coaches. They are specialists with DBs and I am a DB. I love the campus and I love Tucson. That is why I basically committed to U of A."

For Ross it came down to two conference rivals in Arizona and Oregon. But, after narrowing things down, another high profile school jumped in the mix and tried to woo Ross late.

"I loved the visits to both of those schools," Devin said of Arizona and Oregon. "Then USC jumped in kind of late, but by then I had pretty much made my mind up. They were the ones that were recruiting me the hardest and the longest and I felt comfortable with both of those places."

Devin said that he had his mind made up long ago and was set to announce at the Army All-American game earlier this month but after USC came on strong and offered it made him stop and think, even about an official visit.

"I considered a visit for this weekend, but I am committed to Arizona," Ross said. "I made my mind up, and thought about, and realized that the U of A is the best place for me."

With Arizona coming off of back to back 3-8 seasons and with two teams that finished with double digit wins one would think that the previous year's record would matter. But for Ross that simply wasn't the case.

""The record doesn't mean anything to me," he said. "Everything changes year to year. We will all play hard and hopefully I can help bring this team to a national championship and to national prominence."

One of the main reasons that Ross chose to commit to Arizona is the high profile reputation of the Stoops brothers when it comes to coaching defensive backs.

"They are really good coaches," he said. "They are defensive specialists. Everywhere they have been they have had one of the top defenses in the country. We talked about football, and outside life. We developed a really good relationship."

One thing that Devin has yet to do is talk to the Arizona coaches about his potential role with the program, or at least his initial role.

"They have not really talked to me about my role," said Ross. "I know I want to come in and try to start and to come in as a leader and to see this team break through and take one of the leadership roles."

Another reason for choosing Arizona, Ross said, was the Willie Tuitama effect.

"I talked to the quarterback, Willie, a lot," he said. "He would tell me how the program is doing and how everybody is ready to win and how much big time talent they have coming in and that we are going to win some games this year."

Ross' commitment comes at the right time for Arizona. He is the 25th and presumably the final commitment in what could be the best recruiting class in the history of Arizona Football.
