It was the second team offensive line that was the story. While the first grouping struggled with the first defensive line, the second team was dominant. They gave Austin plenty of time to throw and opened some big holes for runners.
A long pass got the first scoring drive going. Austin looked deep down the right sideling but under threw Bobby McCoy. McCoy adjusted to the throw and hauled in a nice juggling catch to get the offense across midfield. A few plays later Austin hit tight end Matt Richards on a nice crossing pattern and Xavier Smith capped the drive with a short plunge up the middle for the touchdown.
Terry Longbons did not see any carries in the early portion of the scrimmage but when he finally did he made an instant impact.
He went up the middle for 13 yards on his first touch, then got around the end for a 40-yard scamper on his next carry. Austin found McCoy on an inside slant for a 13-yard score to round out the scoring.
It was the most unlikely of heroes who sparked the final scoring drive. Austin found walk-on Eric Sheehan down the left sideline and the senior raced 57-yards before getting shoved out of bounds at the two. Two plays later Chris Henry took the sweep into the endzone.
There defense continues to really do some hitting. Dominic Patrick had a number of big hits, including one that knocked Travis Bell out for a few series. Xavier Kelly popped Henry and forced a fumble in the scrimmages early stages.
Lionel Dotson continues to play very well on the inside. Although he gives up a lot of size to the offensive line, he is able to use his speed to get penetration and disrupt things.
Syndric Steptoe and Tuitama teamed for one of the most impressive plays of the day that will not count in the stat book. Tuitama faced a huge pass rush, but stepped up to avoid the sack, scrambled a bit and threw a deep pass down the sideline where Steptoe jumped, made a mid-air adjustment, and came down with the catch. Unfortunately, Steptoe was ruled to have come down out of bounds, but he showed great athletic ability and concentration.
Xavier Smith did not put up staggering numbers, but did show that he does not need a huge hole to break a big run. He snuck through a small opening to get a nice nine-yard run.
Tutiama never looked comfortable. He faced a lot of pressure and missed on a lot of throws.
"He just couldn't find a rhythm," said offensive coordinator Mike Canales.
Tuitama did have one nice throw. He and Steptoe connected on a long touchdown pass. Steptoe got behind his defender, Tuitama hit him and the senior-to-be raced the rest of the way for the 78-yard score.
*Former Wildcat Darrell Brooks was on hand. He spent much of practice trying to motivate the defense.
*Wood's father was on hand and said that his son was ahead of schedule.
*Travis Bell said his ribs were bothering him after the shot from Patrick. The hit was late and that caused his brother, tackle Tanner Bell to shout at the defense.
