Brandon Johnson update

California running back Brandon Johnson (5-11, 190, 4.5) said he slightly favors Oregon (offer) over Miami, Washington (offer), Arizona (offer) and California, but that could change with an offer from the Trojans. The ballcarrier from Dominquez High School in Compton claims to also have an offer from Oregon State and is being recruited the heaviest from Cal, Miami, Colorado, Washington State and USC.

"Oregon is my favorite right now," Johnson said. "They offered me two months ago. I've liked the Ducks since I was a kid. My cousin, Derrick Jones (wide receiver), is going to be a freshman up there this year, so I'd know people up there already. I haven't been there yet, but everyone tells me how nice it is. I'm going up there in June. They have a really strong program that is getting better every year. I get a lot of letters from them just checking in to see how I'm doing.

"USC would definitely be my top pick if I got an offer from them. They have all the top athletes. I'd love to go there because I'd be able to learn from all the top guys in the country like Stafon Johnson(RB, signed in Feb). I went to their junior day and to the Nike combine there last weekend. I just got a letter from Coach (Ken) Norton today telling me they were glad to see me at the combine. He said they've been talking about me in their meetings. I heard they were going to offer me soon. My coach said they have me up on the board to offer.

"Miami is another school I'm looking at. I love them," Johnson said. "They are my other childhood favorite. They play with a cockiness to their game…that's the same way I play. I've gotten a lot of mail from them, but I haven't talked to anyone yet. They wanted me to come out for their junior day, but I couldn't make it. I want to take a visit out there soon, hopefully an official visit.

"I like Washington a lot too. I got the offer about a month ago. I've talked to Coach (Eric) Yarber a lot. He told me that they only have two running backs right now so I could come in and make a big impact early. I want to take an official visit there too.

"Arizona was the first school to offer me," he said. "I got the offer from them last year right after football season. We went down there last summer for camp and I got to check out the campus and facilities. It was really beautiful. I like the facilities a lot too. Everybody on the team is really close and they work hard. They aren't that deep in running backs either."

Johnson said he would like to take a visit to Cal also. "Cal is an up-and-coming team. They can be playing in the national championship game in a couple of years. They're a very young and competitive team. I've been getting a lot of mail from them inviting me to come up. I haven't talked with them yet, but I like to learn more about the school and they program.

"Right now, my plans are to announce my decision the week of the Cal-Florida game or the Army All-American game (sponsored by if I get to play in it," Johnson said.

"I think my strength is my confidence and my strength. Every time I step on the field, I think nobody can stop me. I really need to work on my footwork. I can cut good, but I want to get to where I can cut without slowing down. I need to work on my speed too."

Johnson will be at the combine on May 7.

Final junior (13-1) stats: 1500 rushing yards/24 TDs; bench press: 225
