Lucas-Perry Emerging

Laval Lucas-Perry is finally making a name for himself nationally after stepping out of the shadows of two of Michigan's elite players.

Tom Herzog soaked up most of the attention at Flint Powers while Josh Southern has been the headliner with the Michigan Mustangs. Laval Lucas-Perry is finally stepping out of the shadows of two of Michigan's best big men. Lucas-Perry is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound junior combo guard whose recruitment has recently started to ramp up – and not just on the hardwood. The Flint Powers (Mich.) standout, whose role will significantly increase next year when Herzog is off to college, is also getting more than his share of big-time looks for his exploits on the gridiron.

``I like both sports, but I like basketball better," he said. "I'm not sure what I'm going to do in college, but I'd like to try and play both sports if possible."

Lucas-Perry is a wide receiver/defensive back who is getting recruited by Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana and Purdue for football.

But his heart is clearly with basketball, where he averaged 20 points this past season and has been an all-conference performer for the past two seasons while spending the majority of his time at point guard.

Lucas-Perry said that Michigan, Michigan State, Oakland, Marquette, Stanford and Georgia Tech were all showing interest prior to April. Now you can add Iowa, Wake Forest, Boston College, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Arizona to that list.

``All of them see me as a combo guard," he said.

Lucas-Perry is a smart, instinctive guy who can play either spot. His shooting still needs to be more consistent from the perimeter, but he is able to keep defenders honest from long range and also finish at the rim because of his strength and size.

``Coaches tell me I do everything pretty well," he said. "I'm a rebounding guard who shoots it well, passes it and has floor leadership. I feel that I'm a pretty complete player."

Lucas-Perry said some coaches have drawn comparisons to NBA star guard Gilbert Arenas while other have mentioned he plays a little bit like Hall of Famer Joe Dumars.

``It feels great just to be mentioned with those great players," he said. "I look up to Gilbert Arenas and how he plays."

WILDCAT INSIDER SLANT: Lucas-Perry is coming on strong and the Wildcats are involved. They have been doing very well establishing ties in Michigan and if they need another guard in the class, i.e. problems with Bayless, Lucas-Perry could get a long look.
