Lineman leaves the team

The Wildcats seem poised to have a lot of depth and talent on the offensive line. No fewer than 11 players were in serious contention for playing time as of the spring game. That number can be decreased by one as an offensive lineman is leaving the team.

Redshirt freshman Joe Barresi has left the team. A number of circumstances led to his decision but he claims that he has no ill will towards the program.

"I appreciate the last year and a half I have spent in the program," Baresi said. "I have nothing but good feelings about the staff, the school and Tucson."

Barresi's future is still in doubt. He has not decided where he will go to school or even if he will play football again.

"I'm not real clear what comes next," he confessed. "I just have to take some time and figure out what is best for me and my future."

Barresi said that the coaching staff has left the door open to a return if he wished to rejoin the team before next fall.

Barresi mentioned that is one possibility.

The big lineman from Oklahoma graduated high school early and arrived on campus last spring but inured his shoulder early on in spring ball. The injury slowed his progress and he hinted that it is not 100%.

He performed well this spring but found moving up on the depth chart difficult with other players having a leg up in experience.

His twin brother Ben plays football at Oklahoma and walking on to the Sooners is another possibility. Barresi will take some time to discuss his future with his family before making any final decisions.

He leaves the team in good academic standing.
