Johnson trying to nail down offers

Arizona was lacking outside shooters a year ago. With Jawann McClellan unavailable for the bulk of the season, their efficiency from the outside was lacking. This season they should have McClellan back and Chase Budinger will join the fold. Another good shooter is looking to solidify an offer to join the team in 2007.

Zane Johnson has long been interested in the Cats but did not have an offer. He is a fast riser in the class and it sounds as if Arizona is taking notice. In watching Jerryd Bayless play for the Arizona Magic the Wildcat coaches have seen plenty of the sharp shooting Johnson.

But have they seen enough to offer?

We may soon learn the answer to that question. Johnson will attend the Arizona elite camp and he will have a chance to impress the staff, most notably Lute Olson.

"Coach Olson needs to see him again at the elite camp," said Magic coach Anthony Ray. "That will give Coach Olson a chance to work with him and if he likes him an offer could be coming."

Before that Johnson will have a chance to impress some other coaches. He is off to Florida this weekend and according to Ray a formal offer should accompany the trip. Johnson likes Florida but don't expect a quick decision. Johnson has told both staffs that a commitment won't be coming until he visits both schools.

Ray could not say for sure, but he feels that Johnson is leaning towards the Wildcats over the Gators.

"They develop pros," Ray said of the Wildcats. "Especially guards and wings."

There is no exact date for Johnson to decide, but if the offers from Arizona and Florida arrive, Johnson is expected to make a decision before the July shoe camps.
