David Roberts from Rancho Cucamonga (CA) High School attended the Mike Stoops Football camp this past weekend and he did well enough to earn an offer. He proceeded to go home, talk to his parents and now he is a very firm Arizona Wildcat commit.
"I just got off the phone with Coach (Mike) Canales and Coach (Charlie) Williams and I committed to Arizona," Roberts said with an obvious smile. "They were very excited but not as excited as I am. I wanted to tell Coach Stoops too but they said he wasn't in the office so I will have to call him and tell him tonight. I am a Wildcat and I am very happy and excited."
Roberts was being recruited for Arizona by Offensive Coordinator Mike Canales and according to Roberts the two get along really well.
"Oh man I love Coach Canales," he admitted. "He is such a great guy and he is a blast to talk to and just be around. He is just everything you would want in a coach and in a recruiter. He is honest, smart and funny, he is just a great, great guy."
On top of his great relationship with Canales, Roberts says that he and his future position coach Charlie Williams have struck up a very good relationship as well.
"Coach Williams is my kind of coach," he admitted. "He kind of reminds me of my high school coach. He really knows his stuff and I learned so much at the camp this weekend. He is a great coach and I can't wait to play for him."
Arizona did have something of an ace in the hole in Roberts' recruitment with the presence of one of Roberts' good friends on the Arizona campus and roster.
"Devin Ross is a good guy and we have been friends for a while now," said Roberts. "Him being at Arizona was certainly a positive but I knew that Arizona was the place for me all along. Having Devin be there is just kind of like the cherry on top of the sundae."
Roberts will come in and challenge for playing time right away at Arizona, even with the developing depth at wide receiver. According to him, he is just a complete receiver.
"I am not the fastest guy or the tallest guy," he said. "But I catch everything, I can run good routes and I know how to get open. I like to think that I am a complete wide receiver because that is what it is all about. You have to do everything at your position to be successful."
The main thing for Roberts and choosing Arizona is the comfort level he felt with the staff and the program and especially his love for the campus and the program.
"The coaching staff makes you feel so confident and comfortable," he said. "I love everything about the campus and especially the stadium. During the camp I really liked playing on the field and I can't wait to get on their and win games in an Arizona uniform."
Aside from being a very good football player, Roberts is also one heck of a student. In the classroom he carries a 4.1 GPA and has scored a 1220 on the SAT.
"You can't go to college and just play football," he said. "I take pride in my academics. I want to major in either engineering or something in the mathematics field."
Roberts is the fourth commitment for the Wildcats for the 2007 class and the fourth in the past 30 or so hours. U of A offered four players at the camps over the weekend and now those four prospects make up the commitment list for Arizona.
