Cats in full pads

The Wildcats were in full pads for the first time and a few players got to shine. While a few players were strutting their stuff, quarterback Jason Johnson did not throw a pass. Although contact is still limited, there was a lot popping off going on.

*Jason Johnson ran some running plays against the defensive front seven, but didn't get a single rep in the passing or full team drills. Instead, the senior quarterback did some light running. Coach John Mackovic said he was just giving the senior quarterback a rest.

"I held Jason for his arm," Mackovic said. "I asked him if he was Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson or Tim Wakefield and he said ‘I'm Curt Schilling.' Basically he did what a pitcher would do on an off day."

Mackovic indicated that he might also give Nic Costa and Ryan O'Hara a day off as two-a-days progress.

*Javier Martinez did not practice with the team. According to coach Mackovic he has, "a couple of things he is working through." Mackovic did not know when or if he would return to the team.

*The Cats have added another player in the wake of Matt Lam and Danny Perry leaving the team. Tight End Jerry Johnson has joined the team. The 6-2 Johnson served in the military and decided to try college football. He has a good, solid frame and should give the Cats added bulk at the tight end position.

*The defensive line suffered some more problems as Fata Avegalio went down. True freshmen Marcus Smith and Tim Volk are now working with the first team. For more on Avegalio's injury, plus the status of Clarence Farmer and Andre Torrey, see the INJURY REPORT.
