SERIES NOTES FOR THE GAMES OF SEP. 14:
CALIFORNIA (2-0) at MICHIGAN STATE (2-0) - 12:00 EDT/9:00 PDT - ESPN2 national cablecast -The Series: Michigan State won 19-0 at Berkeley in 1957 and prevailed 32-12 at East Lansing in 1958. The Spartans were ranked in the Top 5 nationally on both occasions. . . . Last Meeting: No. 4-ranked Michigan State defeated California 32-12 at East Lansing early in the 1958 season. The Spartans rushed for 318 yards and outgained the Golden Bears 502-194. However, Michigan State would go on to finish last in the Big Ten, while Cal, behind QB Joe Kapp, went on to win the Pacific Coast Conference title and make its last appearance in the Rose Bowl.
IDAHO (0-2) at OREGON (2-0) - 12:30 PDT - Oregon Sports Network local telecast - The Series: Oregon and Idaho have met 57 times dating back to 1901 with the Ducks holding a commanding series advantage of 50-3-4. Oregon has a current streak of 21 straight wins over Idaho. The Vandals' last win came in 1950 at Moscow (14-0) and Idaho's last win at Eugene was in 1925 (6-0). . . . Last Meeting: Oregon and Idaho met at Eugene in 2000 and the Ducks cruised to a 42-13 win.
USC (1-0) at COLORADO (1-1) - 1:30 MDT/12:30 PDT - ABC regional telecast - The Series: USC and Colorado have met just four times with the Trojans winning all four. In the only previous game played at Boulder, John McKay's top-ranked and defending National Champion Trojans opened the 1963 season with a 14-0 win. . . . Last Meeting: USC and Colorado met at Los Angeles early in the 2000 season with the Trojans pulling out a 17-14 victory.
WASHINGTON STATE (2-0) at OHIO STATE (2-0) - 3:30 EDT/12:30 PDT - ABC regional telecast – The Series: Washington State and Ohio State have met seven times with the Buckeyes taking all seven. Six of the seven games have been played at Columbus. . . . Last Meeting: Washington State and Ohio State met at Columbus in front of 92,000-plus early in the 1991 season with the Buckeyes prevailing 33- 19. The stats were closer than the final score as OSU outgained the Cougars just 479-449. The quarterbacks that day were Drew Bledsoe for WSU (he passed for 287 yards) and current ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit for OSU.
UNLV (1-1) at OREGON STATE (2-0) - 4:00 PDT - TBS Superstation national cablecast - The Series: Oregon State and UNLV have met just three times with the Rebels winning all three. Included are wins in the two previous games at Corvallis (1983 and 1990). . . . Last Meeting: Oregon State and UNLV met at Las Vegas early in the 1991 season with the Rebels posting a 23-9 upset win. . . . ARIZONA STATE (2-1) at SAN DIEGO STATE 0-2() - 7:00 PDT/MST - AZ-TV local telecast - The Series: Arizona State and San Diego State have met nine times with the Sun Devils going undefeated with a 8-0-1 mark. Included is a 5-0-1 mark in games played at San Diego. . . . Last Year: Dirk Koetter made his Arizona State coaching debut a successful affair with a 38-7 opening day win against San Diego State at Tempe.
SAN JOSE STATE (1-1) at STANFORD (0-1) - 7:00 PDT - KRON-TV local telecast - The Series: Stanford-San Jose State is an old neighborhood rivalry that has seen 57 games dating back to 1900. Stanford has an overwhelming 43-13-1 overall lead in the series, but a Cardinal win last season snapped a three-game San Jose win streak at Stanford Stadium. All but three of the games in the series have been played at Stanford. . . . Last Year: Stanford closed out the regular season with a 41-14 win at rainy and muddy San Jose State. The win snapped a three-game Spartan winning streak against the Cardinal.
UTAH (2-0) at ARIZONA (1-0) - 7:15 MST - Fox Sports Net Arizona local cablecast - The Series: Arizona and Utah have met 33 times with the Utes holding a 17-14-2 series edge. The teams have split 16 previous games at Tucson 7-7-2, with the most recent game there being in 1983. Arizona has won the last seven regular season meetings and seven of the last eight overall, with the only loss during that span coming in the 1994 Freedom Bowl. . . . Last Meeting: Arizona met Utah at Salt Lake City in the 2000 season-opener and the Wildcats walked away with a 17-3 win. . . . Coaching Note: Utah coach Ron McBride served as offensive line coach on Dick Tomey's Arizona staff from 1987-89 before being named head coach of the Utes in 1990.

OUT OF OUR LEAGUE: The Pac-10 is off to a good start with a splendid 14-3 (.824) early mark against non-conference opponents. Included is an 11-3 (.786) record vs. Division I-A opponents.
PAC-10: The home team has won 16 of 17 games the Pac-10 has been involved in so far in 2002. The lone exception is Oregon State's 35-3 win on the road at Temple.
ARIZONA: CB Michael Jolivette blocked two punts against Northern Arizona in the Wildcats'
opener, setting up 10 Wildcat points. That matches the number of blocks UA had as a team last year. He was named Pac-10 Special Teams Player of Week for his efforts. . . . QB Jason Johnson passed for a career-high 381 yards and three TDs vs. NAU. In fact, Johnson surpassed his career best when he had 316 yards at halftime. . . . UA defense limited NAU to 202 yards total offense and just nine first downs. . . . Cats hope open date last week will give banged up offensive line chance to heal.
ARIZONA STATE: After trip to San Diego this week, Sun Devils not on the road again until Oct. 19. . . . ASU defense has allowed just one touchdown the last two games. Devils have allowed just 20 yards rushing over that two-game span and have recorded 30 tackles for loss, including 13 QB sacks. . . . Redshirt freshman QB Chad Christensen has not thrown an interception in his first three games. Devils have been picked off just once this year and not at all the last two games. . . . Last week's win vs. Central Florida was coach Dirk Koetter's 50th game as a head coach at Boise State and ASU. His record stands at 32-18 (.640). . . . Junior DE Terrell Suggs has seven QB sacks this year and 27 for his career. He needs one more to move into second place on ASU's career list behind Shante Carver (41 from 1990-93).
CALIFORNIA: Trip to Michigan State this week is Golden Bears' only road trip in first five games. . . . At 2-0, Cal has doubled its win total of a year ago. Bears are off to their first 2-0 start since 1997. Cal has a three-game winning streak going, its longest since 1998. . . . QB Kyle Boller is thriving in coach Jeff Tedford's offense. Boller is completing 63.8% (37-58) of his passes with five TDs and no picks. . . . Golden Bears have just one turnover in first two games and hold a 7-1 turnover advantage. This after being last in the Pac-10 in turnover margin last year. . . . With four interceptions made this year, Cal is halfway to last season's total of eight picks. . . . Bear offensive line has allowed just two QB sacks in two games. . . . Cal is outscoring opponents 66-10 in first half, including 52-10 in first quarter. Bears cut penalties in half from game one to game two (10 for 81 yards in game one, 5 for 42 in game two).
OREGON: Homestanding Ducks play third of first four games at home. UO doesn't leave Eugene until Oct. . . . CB Aaron Gipson is Oregon's first true freshman starter as a position player in five years. . . .Ducks current seven-game winning streak is longest among Pac-10 teams. . . .Through first two games, UO defense has allowed just 140 yards rushing and created six turnovers. . . . Oregon's non-conference record under coach Mike Bellotti now stands at 21-2. Ducks last lost a non-conference game at Wisconsin early in the 2000 season. Bellotti, head coach since 1995, has never lost at home to a non-conference foe. Of course, the Ducks don't lose to much of anybody at home having win 27 of last 28 at Autzen. . . . New starting QB Jason Fife has tossed four TD passes in first two games. . . . 12 of Oregon's last 20 games have been decided by a touchdown or less. . . . WR Keenan Howry has caught at least one pass in 37 straight games. . . . TB Onterrio Smith has rushed for 124 yards in each of Oregon's first two games.
OREGON STATE: CB Dennis Weathersby has become the Beaver career leader in pass breakups. . . . OSU has sold out all its remaining home games. . . . Beavs currently have a five-game home winning streak going and have won 17 of last 19 at Reser Stadium. . . . Any concerns regarding the loss of veteran offensive stalwarts QB Jonathan Smith and TB Ken Simonton may have been allayed by the play of their replacements in OSU's first two games. . . . Soph QB Derek Anderson's two-game passing stats read 48-of-77 (62.3%) for 631 yards, 7 TDs, 0 INTs. In the same two games, TB Steven Jackson has rushed 46 times for 258 yards (5.6-yards average) and 2 TDs. . . . Those two have been big contributors to the Beavers averaging 42.0 points, 514 yards total offense and 322.5 yards passing per game through two games. . . . OSU has 11-3 (+8) advantage in turnover margin due largely to picking off seven passes in first two games.
STANFORD: This week against San Jose State is only home game in first month of season as Cardinal plays three of first four on road. . . . Stanford has five players from Canada on its roster, including starters RB Kerry Carter and SS Oshiomogho Atogwe. . . . FB Casey Moore has started 34 consecutive games for the Card. . . . Redshirt freshman OLB Michael Craven, making his first start at Boston College, returned an intercpetion 33 yards for a TD. Soph CB Leigh Torrence, likewise making his first start, had two picks. . . . Redshirt freshman QB Kyle Matter did a nice job in his collegiate debut at BC. Matter threw for 244 yards and one TD and rushed for another score while filling in for Chris Lewis. He was the first freshman to start at QB for Stanford since 1991 (Steve Stenstrom).
UCLA: Bruins won fifth consecutive season-opener in downing Colorado State (30-19) last week. It ran UCLA's record to 11-1 at home in September since 1996. The Bruins have not lost at home in September since 1997 (30-24 to Tennessee). . . . All-Pac-10 P Nate Fikse now has 200 career punts for 8,632 yards, a career average of 43.2 yards. The UCLA (and Pac-10) career record is 44.6 yards by Kirk Wilson (1956-58). . . . UCLA running game looked fine vs. Colorado State in post-DeShaun Foster era. Bruins rushed for 215 yards and averaged 5.8 yards per carry. TBs Akil Harris and Manuel White carried the bulk of the load combining for 146 yards and three TDs on 24 carries (6.1 per carry). . . . All-Pac-10 CB Ricky Manning ran his starting streak to 33 straight games. USC: QB Carson Palmer was named Pac-10 Offensive Player of Week for leading Trojans to win against Auburn in SC's season opener. Palmer passed for 302 yards and scored the winning touchdown on a QB sneak with 1:26 to play in game. He currently ranks second on SC's career completion list with 641, trailing Rob Johnson's 676 (1992-94). Palmer is approaching inclusion on the Pac-10 career passing and total offense charts. . . . Trojans hit the road for three of their next four games. . . . SE Kareem Kelly has caught a pass in each of his 36 USC games, one game short of John Jackson's (1986-89) school record. The Pac-10 record for most consecutive games catching a pass is 42 by Arizona's Dennis Northcutt (1996-99). . . . USC is unbeaten in its last five regular-season games.
WASHINGTON: After open date this week, Huskies continue a five-game homestand next week with Wyoming. It's the first time since 1931 that Washington has played five straight games at Husky Stadium in a single season. . . . UW has longest active home game winning streak in the Pac-10 at 15 and counting. The modern Husky record for consecutive home wins is 17, set between 1991 and 1993. The overall record is 44 straight home wins from 1908 to 1917. . . . With 347 yards passing vs. San Jose State last week, QB Cody Pickett, just a junior, tied the Husky record for most career 300-yard passing games. He now has four, which ties Brock Huard for the UW record. . . . Pickett's 89-yard TD pass to WR Reggie Williams was the longest pass play in Washington history. Pickett is a long-range bomber. He is the only UW QB ever to throw four 70-plus-yard passes in his career. He has had back-to-back 300-yard passing games to open this season. . . . Huskies trailed San Jose State at halftime (10-0) before coming back to win. It marked the first time UW trailed at home at halftime since 1995.
WASHINGTON STATE: Cougars experienced offensive line has a total of 103 starts among them, an average of 20.6 starts per man tackle-to-tackle. . . . Senior QB Jason Gesser was named one of WSU's captains for the third straight year making him the first three-time captain in the 108-year history of Cougar football. . . . In 49-13 win against Idaho last week, Cougs rushed for 240 yards with two tailbacks averaging better than 10 yards per carry. TB Jonathan Smith averaged 10.1 yards per carry while going for 121 yards and three TDs; TB John Tippins averaged 10.6 yards on eight carries for 85 yards. WSU averaged 9.4 yards per play vs. the Vandals. . . . WSU ran its record to 10-1 in non-conference contests since 1999. . . . Cougars have a five-game road winning streak going. . . . Washington State has scored in 203 consecutive games since being blanked by this week's opponent--Ohio State—in 1984. . . . Cougs have outscored first two opponents 86-21 and have yet to allow a point in the fourth quarter. . . . WSU is "outsacking" opponents 9-2.
