USC received all 25 first place votes and rightfully so.  The Trojans return 10 players on a defense that most analysts predict will prove to be the nation's best.  They also return Heisman hopeful John David Booty at quarterback, who'll be supported by an experienced offensive line and a stable of running backs.

California gets the nod over the UCLA Bruins by a single vote.  Oregon State bests Oregon for the fourth spot while the Arizona Wildcats debut at #6.

Arizona State is #7 and has a chance to be the conference's biggest riser if they can get steady play from Rudy Carpenter at the quarterback position.  The rebuilding Washington Huskies are at #8 and are followed by Washington State and Stanford.

Key non-conference games this week include Cal hosting Tennessee, Washington visiting Syracuse, Washington State traveling to Wisconsin, and Arizona making the trip to the always tough LaVell Edwards Stadium to play the BYU Cougars.

Stanford welcomes UCLA to the Farm for a rare Pac-10 showdown to open the season.
