Cason to stay put

On Monday Mike Stoops announced that there was a chance that corner back Antoine Cason might be moved to free safety. On Tuesday he made an announcement on the possible position switch.

After practice on Tuesday, Stoops told the collected Tucson media that Cason would not be moved to safety. Although there was some discussion amongst the staff about possibly using Cason at safety, allowing Devin Ross to see time at cornerback.

Instead the Cats will leave Cason, a potential All-American, at cornerback. Right now the plan is to continue to use Ross at nickel back. Michael Klyce, Nate Ness and Brandon Tatum are all competing to replace Dominic Patrick at the safety spot. Patrick is out several weeks with a knee injury.

Stoops considered making the move, not only to get Ross to his natural cornerback spot, but to get Cason is a position where he has greater opportunities to make a play on the ball.

In the end the staff did not want to risk putting Cason, their best cover man, at a spot where he was not as familiar.
