This event tonight should give the fans and general public a great look at what's in store for the upcoming season, the incoming freshman class, and a look at returning players and what they may have improved on.
Of course a scrimmage against your teammates is a little different than what you'll see in a few weeks when the regular season officially begins, but this should be an entertaining and exciting event for not only the fans, but for the players and coaching staff as well. The incoming freshmen are especially excited for tonight's scrimmage as they are anxious to display their talents in front of the public.
As mentioned above, this is a Blue vs. Red scrimmage. Playing for the Blue Team will be Nic Wise, Jerryd Bayless, Daniel Dillon, Bret Brielmaier, Mohamed Tangara, and David Bagga. Playing for the Red Team will be Laval Lucas-Perry, Chase Budinger, Jamelle Horne, Alex Jacobson, Jawann McClellan, and Lucas Spencer. It has been announced that both Zane Johnson and Kirk Walters will be playing for both teams.
However, there is some disappointing news going into tonight's Blue vs. Red scrimmage. Both Fendi Onobun and Jordan Hill will not be participating in tonight's event due to injuries. Onobun is suffering from a shin injury, and Hill is suffering from a sprained knee. It wasn't noted whether either injuries were serious.
Some other notes are that things are going quite well in practice. Guys are working very hard, putting in a lot of effort, and it seems to be paying big dividends. The intensity has been up at a high level throughout the early season so far, which is something the coaching staff is very pleased with.
The health concerns of Kirk Walters have been an important issue throughout the early part of the season, and there's good news to report on that issue as well. Walters and his health continue to improve on a daily basis as he's beginning to get his legs underneath him. Kirk knows that the Cats are counting on him to be a crucial part of this year's squad, and the coaching staff is still counting on him to be just that.
As for the surprisingly popular topic of Alex Jacobson not redshirting this year, that decision is still up in the air and will be made by Coach Lute Olson. Typically, decisions on red shirts aren't determined until after the exhibition games, where the freshmen usually get a good amount of minutes. That will be the case again with the likes of Jacobson, Johnson, and Lucas-Perry.
However, the coaching staff has been very pleased with the amount of confidence that Jacobson continues to gain while playing very well during practice. He's gaining a lot of confidence, and is improving on a daily basis, much like the majority of the team.
