Tidbits: Head Cold Edition

Jumping around from this subject to that. Random thoughts on a Tuesday morning while trying to kick a nasty head cold. It's time for the Return of the Tidbits.

My thoughts on the Wildcat football team are mixed. I said before the season that this team had seven-win talent and could win eight or nine. Guess what? They won five and lost four more by a touchdown or less. Am I pleased? Nope, they underachieved. I can stomach losing close ones to USC and ASU (though they outplayed USC for all but the final 8:00) but losing to New Mexico and Stanford is unacceptable. The Cats had chances to beat both, but couldn't…

Next year could shape up well. Sure they lose a lot on defense, but it could be addition by subtraction on offense. The schedule is soft in the non-conference and the toughest conference games are at home. Even with a young defense if this team does not win seven, something is seriously wrong…

Although Arizona will surely miss Spencer Larsen and Antoine Cason, they will really be hard pressed to replace Lionel Dotson and Yaniv Barnett. Right now the Cats will go into next season with undersized Donald Horton and the inexperienced Lolo Mikaele, Kaniela Tuipulotu, Hans Phillipp and Corey Elmore on the interior defensive line…

Just think how good this Arizona basketball team could be if they did not get behind early? In all three games against Virginia, Kansas and Texas A&M the Cats successfully battled back from first half, double figure deficits…

In my mind the Cats still need to find a reliable third scorer. Jerryd Bayless and Chase Budinger have been great but they can't shoulder the load. Jawann McClellan just isn't that guy and I am not sure you can rely on Jordan Hill or Nic Wise to get you consistent scoring…

I have long said that the UCLA Bruins are a terrific team but will miss Aaron Afflalo in crunch time. Against Texas it was Luc Richard Mbah a Moute trying to hit the game tying three. Last year Afflalo would have had the ball and you'd be a lot more confident with him shooting. I still think that the Bruins are the team to beat, but they aren't as good a team as they were a year ago down the stretch…

The overall difference in talent between ASU and Arizona was minimal. They had the same caliber of athletes, it was just when push came to shove the Devils found ways to make plays. On a handful of plays the Sun Devil receivers seemed to almost will themselves to make tough catches. There is no reason Rudy Carpenter's flip pass to the endzone should have worked. Chris McGaha and Brent Miller's catches were sheer determination. Save for one tough catch by Mike Thomas, the Cats failed to make the tough catch…

I don't know what was changed in the Wildcats' off season conditioning program, but I'd swear Bret Brielmaier looks more athletic and slightly more explosive. Last year I said he had milked as much out of his ability as he could, I may have been wrong, he looks better this year. Considering he is paying his own way this year, he may be the biggest bargain in college basketball…
