Hoop Notes: Injury update

Arizona coach Kevin O'Neill generally holds his weekly press gathering on Tuesdays and despite the holiday, did so this week. Here are the highlights from the Q&A session.

*KO listed Jerryd Bayless as "very doubtful" with his MCL sprain. The good news is there is no real damage and the frosh will be back as soon as he can bear it from a pain standpoint.

*Bret Brielmaier has a class-1 shoulder separation. He is expected to return to practice on Wednesday and the team expects him back for the Oregon State game.

*KO said for the first time all season he was disappointed in the defensive effort down the stretch against Memphis.

*At first glance it looked like he gave the team a New Year's gift by allowing them to practice at 12:00 on Tuesday. The truth was that the women's team had an early practice scheduled, forcing the men into the later start time.

*KO discussed how the Pac-10 has improved since he was an assistant the last time. He said back in the late 80's the team expected to win the league every year. He admitted that this year six or more teams have a legitimate shot at winning the league.

*He said that while Nic Wise was used to logging minutes, there is always an adjustment to going from the bench to a starter. He stressed that any time a role changes, there is an adjustment, even if it is a minor role change.

*KO gave Kirk Walters praise for his defensive effort against Memphis, but was not happy about his offensive play. He was critical of the fact that the senior big man had as many shots at the half as did Chase Budinger.
