Players meet with Likens, rumors abound

Sources close to the Arizona football program have indicated that a number of football players met with University of Arizona President Peter Likens. The exact nature of the meeting is not known although officially the meeting was to discuss the disappointing football season.

Details of the meeting are not known, but other sources indicate that the meeting enabled players to voice their displeasure with Head Football Coach John Mackovic. Reports indicate that parents and boosters may have been at the meeting.

Athletic Director Jim Livengood met with Mackovic this evening but would not comment on the situation after leaving the football offices shortly after 11:00 Tuesday night.

Mackovic left the offices shortly thereafter and also would not comment to the media on the situation.

A column by the Arizona Daily Star's Greg Hansen speculated that several UA athletic boosters were trying to raise funds to buy out the remaining years of Mackovic's contract. Cat Tracks could not confirm that any money had been collected or that any serious talks have occured, but we have heard from reliable sources that at least a few prominant boosters are concerned with the state of the football program.

We'll try to get more information as details become available.
