Mackovic apologizes, remains UA coach

Amidst a 24-hour storm of controversy, John Mackovic announced he will continue to coach the Arizona football team.

Arizona football coach John Mackovic issued a public apology during a press conference at the UA, where he promised better communications with disgruntled players stemming from comments made after the team's loss at Wisconsin.

Mackovic called the situation a personal embarrassment, but said while this is an obstacle, it could become an opportunity for better things.

The Wildcats are 3-7 overall, 0-6 in Pac-10 play. They travel to California Saturday and close out the season at home against ASU November 27.

Arizona Athletic Director Jim Livengood endorsed the move, following a display by a reported 55 Wildcat football players who met with University President Peter Likins Tuesday night. Mackovic spent well over 90 minutes meeting and apologizing with players Wednesday afternoon.

Cat Tracks will have full excerpts from the Mackovic/Livengood press conference later this evening.
