Fall Camp Day 3 Notes
Day three of fall camp is over with and while there were not any surprises, the freshmen continue to impress.
Robert Golden was once again dominant, as he totaled at least six tackles and an interception. The play of Arizona's secondary is becoming a bigger and bigger story because head coach Mike Stoops legitimately loves all three cornerbacks. Whether it is Marquis Hundley, Devin Ross, or Golden, Stoops has raved about his secondary after each practice.
Speaking of Golden, he had a play that signifies just how intense this year's camp has been. In a play that some may have felt was dead, Golden blew up Nicolas Grigsby on the sideline to the roars of the defense. Seconds later, wide receiver David Roberts ran over to scuffle a bit with Golden, but the message was already sent.
It is becoming more obvious that Matt Scott is not going to redshirt. He is getting too many reps and it would not make sense to sit somebody that can change the offense so dramatically. It is no secret that there will be some new sets with Scott and he is the only signal caller currently on the team that has the capabilities of changing the offense this dramatically.
Grigsby is distancing himself from the pack but the battle for number two is going to be fun. Freshmen Keola Antolin and Nick Booth are competing for that second spot and both have been impressive. We like Antolin a bit more because of his ability to catch the ball but it is possible that the UA got two steals.
Dominique Austin deflected a pass on his first play when most thought he would see little to no playing time. It may still be a foregone conclusion that he is going to redshirt, but Austin has plans to make the decision difficult. The Wildcat coaches certainly would not mind that and Wednesday was a good start.
It is hard to read too much into Arizona's struggles offensively. On one hand, it is just the preseason but on the other hand, Arizona's defense has been amazing. With four more interceptions on Wednesday, the preseason magazines may regret saying that the UA's biggest problem would be on defense.
Willie Tuitama had a rough day but he has never been a practice quarterback. He fully knows the expectations on him and no performance in practice can ever overshadow a game that he will play in this upcoming season.
