First practice at Ft. Huachuca a success

Practices at Ft. Huachuca began on Thursday and while it was not very action-packed, it sure makes Arizona coach Mike Stoops know what he was doing. The players entered the field looking closer than ever and rightfully so, as it is a unique experience.

  • Special teams has a bit more focus than usual because of the injury to Keenyn Crier. Kyle Day and Alex Zendejas competed for the honors to likely punt in at least the first regular season game and neither was very impressive.

Ideally, the UA will not have to punt early in the season because of the weak schedule. Our guess is that Zendejas will have the punting duties but the faster crier comes back, the better Arizona will be.

  • Most people are not talking about Xavier Kelley but he has looked very good in camp. He has gotten much bigger and continually shows good instincts in tipping passes at the line.

Instead of criticizing the quarterbacks for this, we choose to compliment Kelley for his solid play. Arizona has gone from a situation in which many felt it would not have much linebacker depth to a situation in which it has linebackers to spare.

  • Brooks Reed continues to dominate, a she got yet another sack on Thursday. We feel he has cemented his status as a starter and is now proving to be one of the better players on the squad. When he first came to the UA, the chances he would be this good were minimal. However, he has been working very hard and it is obvious in the way that he takes the field.

  • As good as Robert Golden is, there is still a possibility that he does not start. Marquis Hundley has been very consistent, tipping passes and playing solid man defense. Hundley is a very underrated cornerback and although Golden will play significantly, he may have ground to make up if he hopes to start the season opener.

  • Zander Fabbri is getting more and more playing time and doing well with it. He already looks like an upper classmen and he has showed that he may have the brains to play right away.

Obviously he is not going to start but if he could be a player that gives others a break and contributes while doing so, we see no reason why he should not play his freshman season.

  • Arizona can not go public with the fact that Matt Scott is the second quarterback but anybody could see that he will be. When we have talked to Scott he seems to be modest, thus the concern of a freshman getting a big head should not be present with him.
