In past years, the media has viewed Mike Stoops as an arrogant, stubborn and distant figure. However, this year he has suddenly become friendly and confident in his team.
Some say that he is finally maturing as a coach while others feel that he is kissing up to the media so he doesn't get blasted.
This week he had a press conference and once again was overly kind heading into game week. Most of the time during these press conferences, Stoops seems nervous and angry. However, once again, he presented himself well and spoke calmly to the media.
"I think I am more anxious to see what is going to happen Saturday night with how our kids react, what kind of start we get off to, and how our defensive players play," Stoops said.
All Arizona fans are anxious for the same after a decade of disappointments inside Arizona Stadium. Stoops realizes that he is not going up against a tough opponent but still feels that he can learn plenty about his team based on how it performs.
"I know Idaho is not LSU or BYU but again we are just worried about Arizona and how we present ourselves Saturday," Stoops said. "We will learn a lot about ourselves regardless of our opponent."
Unfortunately, Stoops will be without Rob Gronkowski, who is battling a case of mononucleosis.
"Robbie is pretty much ruled out of this week's game," Stoops said. "We don't think he will be part of our game plan this week. It will be a week to week kind of situation to see how his condition progresses.
"It is going to be a week to week deal. We are pretty confident it is not going to be a significant amount of time. By significant I mean three or four weeks at the most. We are optimistic it will be sooner than that."
If Gronkowski isn't back sooner than Stoops' timetable of three or four weeks, that calm look on his face might quickly vanish.
