Cal becomes must win

After the loss to Stanford, the picture for Arizona football became clear. Cal has now become a must win game because, otherwise, the confidence the team had earlier in the season will likely be gone.

You will not hear an argument from this writer if you say that it is the same case every year because frankly it has been. Every year we get hope as Arizona fans and every year we get disappointed. No matter the coach, the higher expectations, the higher our level of disappointment.

Maybe we should not have expectations. After all, maybe it is our faults that we expect so much from an Arizona program that really has never been all that good. Obviously, there has been some good seasons but the majority of the conference has done better. Why do we expect so much from a program that has given us so little?

Either way, that is an entirely different argument. Now the season revolves around Cal, not around our expectations. Make no mistake about it, Cal is a very winnable game. The Golden Bears have had good games against bad teams and mediocre games against good ones. As bad as Arizona State has been, the Sun Devils should have beat Cal.

The game may come down to the play of the defensive line, which is a scary thought. If it plays like it did against Stanford, the UA will have absolutely no chance. However, if it steps up to the occasion, the Wildcats will be in it.

If Arizona wins, the season outlook will be much stronger than it would be if the UA loses. A loss diminishes most of the hope surrounding the program, but a win brings it back against a USC team that is likely still the best in the country.
