There was no excuse for Arizona's effort at UNLV on Saturday. Here is a notebook of our main thoughts:

  • Russ Pennell showed why nobody should ever mention him for the Arizona job. At one point he put Zane Johnson in the game and the UA went on an 8-0 run. He then took him out and UNLV went on a 9-0 run, only to see him put Johnson in? Why did he ever take Johnson out when Arizona was obviously making a move?
  • In addition, his refusal to play Brendon Lavender is becoming very suspect. Lavender can certainly make some sort of impact for ten minutes, but Pennell won't even play him for one. Even when Nic Wise and Fyle Fogg look awful, Lavender is sitting on the bench. If Pennell wants to put the UA in the best position to win, Lavender needs to play.
  • Speaking of Wise, he definitely played a weak game on Saturday. He passed up open shots and then forced others. For some reason his IQ just was not there, which is a bit disappointing with his experience.Wise needs to play much better if Arizona is going to beat good teams.

  • Jordan Hill needs to get the ball almost every time down court. He is the best player on the team and barely got the ball inside the paint on Saturday. Sure, UNLV played good defense. However, the coaching staff needs to do better at finding a way to get him the ball.
